Where to buy dog shifting parts?

Does anyone now where I can buy shifting dogs (the part that locks onto the gear) other than from andymark?

Also, can anyone tell me if and how this axle could be machined (this is off of a WCP DS shifting gearbox):

I'm attempting to design a 2 speed gearbox for the first time, so any pointers would be appreciated.

You can grab that particular axle here:http://www.vexrobotics.com/vexpro/mo.../217-3635.html

(other components separate are available at the bottom of the DS Shifter page)

Re: Where to buy dog shifting parts?

You can buy the WCP dog and shifting rod from Vex.
And the shaft as well.

Just look at their dog shifter page here and you can scroll down to where they list all the parts, and all the shifting bits have links to buy them separately. Same for their ball shifter things.

EDIT: Aren beat me to it.

You would need both a mill and a lathe the machine a stepped hex shaft like that. Start with a piece of hex stock (make sure it's the proper alloy!) the largest size required, clamp it to a flat surface, and sequentially face mill each edge down to the smaller size. The mill would also be used to put the slot in the shaft. Following this, a lathe would be used to round down the other end, bore the pin hole, and put the snap ring groove in.

Re: Where to buy dog shifting parts?

You can also buy the PTO Kit and get everything needed for that setup. We are going to try turning some of our 3CIM SS gearboxes to shifters. On mobile so I can't link but you can find it on the DS page.

Thanks for the breakdown. Have you tried this yourself?

Yes, our team has made similar parts before. It's not something I would do simply for a drop-in replacement -- it's a time consuming process and not worth the couple of bucks it would save to us. However, having the ability to do this opens up a lot of options. In our case, it enabled us to use an alternate design which required a longer rounded segment than on the stock shaft.
