While there were a number of Team 254 mentors involved with Bite Force, there is no association between the two. Paul has been building Battlebots for longer than he has done FRC (and well before joining 254).

Bite Force's appearance is proof of this; that robot is not nearly blue enough to be a 254 machine.

Re: Battlebots Renewed!

This was in the Battlebots email blast I got tonight:

BattleBots Brawler | November 2015
Our First Newsletter

Greetings BotFans and thanks for signing up for the BattleBots Brawler Newsletter. We’ll be sending these out a few times a year, with frequency increasing around Tournament/TV show registration, live events and TV premiere times. For day-to-day updates on all things BattleBots please follow us on social media at:

Facebook.com/battlebots
Youtube.com/battlebots
Twitter: @BattleBots
Instagram: @BattleBots
Season 2 is On!

That’s right, BattleBots will be returning to ABC this Summer with more incredible robot carnage. We’ll announce the air dates as soon as possible. The second season of BattleBots will continue to wow viewers with next generation robots – bigger, faster, and stronger than ever before. The robots will again wage battle in a single elimination Tournament until there is one champion. The Tournament will double in size and feature an expanded field to include expert roboticists, garage builders, families on a mission, as well as past winners returning to defend their turf. Viewers will see new technologies, more destructive bots, and even the possibility of drones and flying BattleBots. The Tournament will be open invitation with the bots and builders casting process beginning immediately (see below for more details).

Season 2 Live Tournament Details (all information subject to change).

• When: Tentatively scheduled for late March or Mid April 2016. We will announce the official dates and location as soon as possible.

• Where: Most likely in Southern California.

• Tournament Length: The Tournament will take place over approximately 10 days.

• How Many Robots: We're looking for 56 incredible robots (48 entrants along with 8 alternates). One of them might be yours! Entry into Season 2 will be very competitive and selected from the best / most interesting design submissions.

• Rules: You may download the Season 2 Design Rules at http://battlebots.com/rules.

• Tickets: Ticket will go on sale for the Season 2 Live Tournament Spring of 2016 (we’ll send out another newsletter when sales are up).
How Do I Enter a Robot For Season 2?

The BattleBots online application system is live!

Go to http://registration.battlebots.com to enter your design application for Season 2.

Please note that we’re asking applicants to design a robot, not build a robot. As building a robot is dangerous, time consuming and expensive, you should only start building if you are notified by BattleBots that your design submission has been accepted, and you have completed other entry procedures that will be required by our broadcast partners. If you decided to build before this, you do so at your own risk.

BattleBots Inc. and its affiliates reserve the right to reject any application for any reason and without explanation.

Design Applications will include the following materials:

• Technical details of your robot design

• Technical drawing of your robot design

• Exterior renderings of your robot design

• Biographical information

• A Team video

Go to http://registration.battlebots.com for the full details. The submission deadline for the Design Application form is December 14, 2015. BattleBots reserves the right to extend the submission deadline or re-open submissions at a later date.
Some Tips:

Entry into Season 2 will be very competitive and selected from the best / most interesting design submission. Here are some tips for standing out.

• We’ll want a good mix of various robots (spinners, lifters, grapplers, hammers, etc). If you can think of a new twist on these tried and true active weapons, or better yet, come up with something new and exciting—that will make you stand out.

• So many combat robots these days are rectangles with 4-wheels and a weapon on top. We want more interesting shapes and designs. Think of a robot design that is not only competitive, but is also distinctive and cool looking—something that could be made into a toy or appear in a video game.

• Modularity is not required, but modular / multi-weapons robots are cool, competitive and a good strategy.

• Your robot design should have personality and character. That doesn’t mean glue fake eyes and hair to it—it means the robot embodies something that makes it stand out and is memorable. This can be as simple as a cool paint job, or as complex as anthropomorphic elements that bring your Team’s bot to “life.”

• Your Team needs to be interesting and have a compelling back story.
Good resources for building a bot are:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/RoboCommunity/

http://www.amazon.com/Kickin-Bot-Ill.../dp/0764541137

That’s all for now. Thanks for reading, follow us on social media and stay tuned for more news.

Best,
BattleBots

There are smaller antbot competitions. The combat is pretty fun to watch.

Even so, the minimum cost of something RC with weapons would be more than I could justify. $200+ and machining time on something that will likely not live through a tournament wouldn't be my first choice for where to spend money.

Re: Battlebots Renewed!

I think my kids would be into it, maybe if it's renewed again for 2017. Several important points catch my attention:
  • they seem to be taking a cue from last year's FRC game, in that multiple bots are okay as long as they fit in an 8'x8' square at the start of the match. Nice!
  • teams shouldn't build a bot, but instead should design a bot for approval before building.

We've already got a freshman squad, maybe this could be for ranking seniors only.

Slap a flamethrower on that bad boy and you got yourself a battlebot (sub-bot). Maybe you can lease it to BiteForce as an aerial assistant.

And I only saw what I did there after I typed it

That's actually the same as last year.

If I recall, there wasn't actually a starting limit to size, just that it had to fit through the 8'x8' doorway. Perhaps I was mistaken.

I was referring to multi bots. The size thing may be different. I don't remember what it said last year. You just had to be generally inside the starting box, but as I recall, someone couldn't fit all the way inside it during a certain configuration and they were fine.

I hadn't ever read their rules before. Maybe it was the other way around, or maybe the two competitions came up with the idea independently. But I didn't recall seeing multibots in any battlebots match before.

They've been around for a long time. Last season the only multis had one big robot and one or more "minibots," but other teams have done multibots which split the weight between them pretty evenly. It's an interesting challenge because the total robot weight is what counts, and an impact between a 250lb robot and a 125lb robot isn't going to go well for the 125lber unless it's built very defensively. FRC where you're playing against the field as much/more than you are playing against your opponent.
