i remember a while back First was working on making a book, kind of like behind the design for 2015. Has anyone heard any news on it?

Re: What ever happened with the book First was Making?

Thanks Tom. Yes, the plan is to have it available to all in January. FIRST is still working out the details on distribution, but I can promise you it's real. Vince and I are very excited to share it with everyone soon! I will make sure any official announcements are also posted to CD.

Re: What ever happened with the book First was Making?

The market for used stuff is interesting...I think when no one wants something, the price is low, then when a bunch of folks all want it at once, the price shoots up. Then folks who sell stuff see that it's valuable, and find them and offer more of them for sale....the price drops...etc.

I notice this on old stuff I buy and sell on ebay

Thanks for the tip. I bought another. I bought the last one for sale for sale at the time for over $70 during Champs this past year.

Re: What ever happened with the book First was Making?

I'm really looking forward to this book coming out too. Such a great coffee table book.

I wish they had come out in the holiday season, I know I would want one as a gift, and can think of more than a few people I would give one to as a present.

Re: What ever happened with the book First was Making?

If history is any guide, the book will be chocked full of insight from the best brains in the FIRST world.

My role on FIRST is going to be somewhat limited this year, but I still want to be involved in the FIRST world. SO...

I am thinking that I may use the book as a jumping off point for some classes on Tips and Tricks for succeeding in FIRST. Maybe a I could host a Google Hangout to discuss the book as a group? Time will tell. Stay tuned.

IN ANY CASE, I am definitely getting one of these books. If you're serious about FIRST FRC, you probably should too.

Dr. Joe J.

Re: What ever happened with the book First was Making?

+1. I have recommended this book to many teams. As the kids cycle through, knowledge about how to handle certain challenges can get lost, and these are a great resource.

Pre-orders?

I am also looking forward to this book. Being relatively new to FIRST, I only just read the old versions a few months ago and was impressed with the information they contain. I think it will be a great reference during the build season for younger teams, so they can see what is really possible with FRC robot design.

As to your wish, I think FIRST should sell vouchers or pre-orders for the new book before the holidays. That would still make a great gift even though you won't have a copy in hand for a while. In addition, this would allow anyone who really wants a book to ensure they get one without any concerns about the entire print lot being sold out (as I have heard happened with the previous books). The track record shows that this book is going to be at least as good as the last, so I personally am ready to put my order in right now without seeing the finished product.
