I agree. An alliance that can reverse the score quickly will be most effective. Such as in your shoveling match scenario, sacrificing your position or an immediate point gain is a great strategy. In fact, it still allows the other team to get some points, but you squeak them out with a greater net influx of points. It will be beneficial in adjusting the score enough to win, but not enough to dominate (which is perfect). There are plenty of other strategies using a similar concept such as goal and ball stealing.
