Portcullis Angle Iron - Anybody notice this?

Has anyone noticed the piece of angle iron on the base of the Portcullis? It is on the courtyard side. What purpose do you think it serves?

This for brought up at our last meeting. Although nobody noticed it until now on our team, it looks like it won't cause any drastic remodeling (thank god)

Yeah, it won't affect our robot at all because of our drivetrain, but it's placement is interesting.

Maybe this would effect anyone trying to put a wedge on the front of the Robot because it would cause the front or your robot to go up and then you couldn't get under the bottom of the portcullis.

It's courtyard side though so teams will probably choose an easier method to cross back anyway.
