2016 SCRRF Pre-Bag Scrimmage

Thought I'd post the link to SCRRF's "Spring" Scrimmage.

The event is being hosted at Valencia HS (site of the new OC Regional) rather than the usual Harvey Mudd College. (anyone know why?)

Should be fun to get some on-field time with other Los Angeles/Orange County area teams.

$250 for an unofficial scrimmage? Why?

Website says that funds are used for scholarships and event costs.

Still pretty high for local rookie teams, but they waive fees too.

This is a very expensive field to build. The field for the Scrimmage is approximately full size and includes two complete sets of defenses, towers etc.

We focus the Scrimmage on teams in their first few years, especially rookies. So ROOKIES GET IN FREE. In addition, SCRRF's policy is to not let financial issues keep a team from participating in any of our events. All a team that cannot pay for one of our events has to do is contact SCRRF and we will work something out. We usually need volunteers for load-in and load-out, field reset, referees etc. The important thing is they contribute to the event.

If we should happen to make a significant amount money the excess above what we need to operate is returned to the teams as scholarships.

We enjoyed our time at Harvey Mudd as it has a nearly perfect venue, but they charged us more rent than we could afford last year. Valencia is much cheaper

Hasn't been one in the past. OTOH, this is the first time at this venue for the Scrimmage.

That being said, if the past is any indication, >3 robots on the field won't be common.

Re: 2016 SCRRF Pre-Bag Scrimmage

A worthy question, cost of participation:

**We subsidize rookie teams-some can barely get themselves to the venue with their gear, and we want all to have access to this kind of education.
**Covers actual event costs.
**Building and maintenance of the playing field.
**Purchase of field elements- last year it was a bunch of totes and stuff. This year a huge amount of raw material (and a vast amount of donated and skilled labor) to build the field elements (this will be a full-size field, with all elements to be changed-in-out based on official game rules).
** Excess goes to the scholarships we hand out at the Long Beach Regional.

The bigger picture:

Is for rookie teams to have opportunity to benefit from veteran teams and the veteran's skills- each year we have a team show up with diverse robot parts in boxes and totes, and everyone jumps in to help build a drive-worthy machine. Everyone gets to practice with their new machine and work out the kinks and develop real-time strategy, as well as scouting practice and pit-related stuff.

This year's game presents a huge logistical challenge with lots of junk, storage, other stuff, and we want an early opportunity to experiment with field choreography between moving parts and element selection by teams and the timing thereof. it will benefit all venues in the greater So Cal area, and if we can get it streamed, the rest of the FRC community.

Have an awesome season!
