Re: Scream For Sally
I think the point here is mainly that in general, no one can do the drawbridge on their own. Because of this, the only reason you would vote for the drawbridge is to prevent other teams from doing as well as they could be due to a lack of vision. Therefore, in order to keep qual matches more interesting, we should scream for sally.
In addition, you have to remember when screaming you are not in isolation. You are paired with alliance partners when competing. Although you may think impairing vision to your side of the field does not affect your own teams score, it may still affect your partners. This means most likely you would still be hurting yourself more than the other team. Especially if you were close to weakening a tower, and one of your partners doesn't get onto the batter(or whatever its called) due to that lack of vision. #ScreamForSally |

Re: Scream For Sally
The big thing about Scream for Sally is that it's for the audience selection defense. When the audience selects the drawbridge it affects all the teams and mostly for the worse since you have to rely on a camera or a marker to figure out where your robot is.
Some teams are saying it doesn't affect them because of the camera, but it does with reasons being that in the heat of a competition you don't want to take your eyes off the robot and look at a computer screen, plus the point of view on the camera is objectively inferior to seeing the robot in its entirety. Our team played a match where both the drawbridges were audience selected along with both the portcullis out (the CDF's were out of commission for that round) and the match was extremely slow because of it, nobody wanted a broken robot. If you believe your team can deal with the drawbridge easily, then feel free to select it for your match, but for the good of all the teams and entertaining competition the audience should scream for sally. |

As if I and my tiny team needed another reason to loath the screaming-as-selection process.

then try to help them but I think the limited vision adds to the challenge of the game. Its just like any other challenge in the game if you cant do it then you cant. It should have been something discussed. |

This. My scouting team and I will ask our team to scream for whatever defense is advantageous to us, or a limiting factor to other teams.

Re: Scream For Sally
So you're saying that there's a difficult element in the game, and you want us to do everything in our power to remove it so it's easier for teams that didn't take it into consideration?

Re: Scream For Sally
I could easily go both ways on this. Having driven in very bad scenarios this year with the drawbridge out I would totally vote for the Sally port. For all the people in this thread, how many have actually driven on the field and tried to see around the drawbridge? I'm sure if you got behind the glass you would have a different perspective on the matter. Honestly I would say that for improving qualification matches #screamforsally sounds like a good idea. We choose to not put it out on our side as much as possible because it's such a pain to see around. And yes we have a camera on our robot, and no it does not work to drive with because of lag. Driving with a camera is not the most advantageous way to drive. Yes we will likely still see the drawbridge, but the next time before you place it out there consider your alliance drivers and make them happy by #screamingforsally. For elimination rounds everything is fair game, and defended should be chosen that will help you win.

So you're not trying to win your qualification rounds? I see where you're coming from--trust me, a drawbridge landing in position 2 is one of my least favorite things about this game, when it happens--but for a game that's seeded based on RPs, and 2 RPs are available from winning the match while only 1 is available from breaching defenses, you should really think seriously about winning vs. visibility. Is it going to be easier to win--and thereby collect more RPs--with better visibility, or if your opponents are stymied by one of the toughest defenses in the game, and the inability to see behind it easily? |

Re: Scream For Sally
Most teams just avoid the Sally port and drawbridge anyway, so why block your visibility and hurt your ability to gain ranking points by putting out a defense that nobody tries anyway and only makes life harder on you. I am still of the opinion of not putting it out in quals. It's just a nuisance and if it avoided anyway, why make life way harder? Yes I want to win qualification matches, and yes I want the ranking points. If the whole argument against it is making it harder for the other team yet making it harder for you to see, I would always rather see. I can't breach or score if I can't see.

Re: Scream For Sally
At the Indiana District Tippecanoe Event, the Sally Port was chosen by the audience during eliminations. The roar of the crowd was deafening in favor of the Sally Port. When the emcee announced the drawbridge, the crowd went silent for a moment and then laughed. Come to think of it, sometime halfway through the first day (Saturday) it was rare to see the Drawbridge on the field.
