WIRED.com article about FRC

I was browsing WIRED magazine online the other day and I came across this article. It doesn't go into great detail, but it's great that FIRST is getting the publicity. What do you guys think about the coverage?

Re: WIRED.com article about FRC

Pretty generic. But press is always good. But...

No interviews with kids? I think you could write that article without ever going to the event.

Re: WIRED.com article about FRC

There's definitely a ways to go in terms of people "getting it"

ex: "medieval robot wars"; "teams of up to a dozen kids"

but it's a step, and steps are good.

Does anyone know whose robot that is in the picture by the way?

As a matter of fact, I do. Those lifting handles are rather distinctive. What you can't see is the intake/hook assembly, which is also distinctive.

FRC3863, Pantherbotics, Newbury Park, CA. Good at a late scale if they're on the bar, decent low/high goal if they didn't get their intake smoked by a tip (and yep, that happened at L.A.). L.A. Regional Judges' Award. Tank of a robot, too. If you look through the opening 10-picture slideshow, they've got a team member in #10, and might be one of theirs in #7 as well.

While the article could've been more accurate, I did like some of the photos in the gallery (EDIT: more photos of the event by Christopher Baliwas can be found here). The photo below caught my eye in particular.

Re: WIRED.com article about FRC

LOL everyone on my team was cracking up at the picture taken of the ginger person (yes, even him) because of how out of context that photo was taken. He was actually just wiping sweat off his face after having to replace a burnt motor and talon, but uses both hands because he wears glasses. Still an interesting way to look at it nonetheless.

That wasn't after that playoff tip, was it? I remember you guys smoking, and then saying your intake was toast.

I think it was while he was waiting for our wiring guy to get the intake running which we successfully did. You don't see the bot because it's on its side at the very front of the pit.

Yeah, that tip caused quite the discussion - at the Ventura regional (which we went to as well) the head ref even cited it as an example of how an illegal tip could cause a team to get a red card and forfeit their points (which is what happened at LA with our opposing alliance).

Re: WIRED.com article about FRC

There was an article on http://www.tmj4.com/ that the headline read until it was updated

Robots reign supreme today at first ever Robotics competition in Milwaukee

It was since updated, but still the headline made me laugh so hard.
