A few tips:
1. The transparent part has to be transparent in your editing program. Transparency generally has the checkerboard background in editing programs.
2. Make sure the image is already the correct size (max 80px square) in your editing program before you save. With editing programs, you can adjust sharpness values after resizing to ensure it looks crisp.
3. Make sure you save as PNG (either 8-bit or 32-bit mode) or GIF (8-bit) with alpha transparency turned on - this will normally be a setting when you export/save the image. PNG is preferred over GIF for web graphics work like this. JPEG cannot support transparency.
