I highly recommend attending the GOFIRST MN Splash event. It'll have tons of great workshops and resources for your team.

Sam, I will be "indisposed" during the Build Season but quite happy to come over sometime before then. Having been a very green rookie team last year, I've Seen Things....

Re: Looking for Mentors Twin Cities rookie team 6480

While I'm already tied to a team, I'm not too far away from you. I may be able to lend a hand once in a while, and I know mentors from other teams in the area that could help answer questions or get their kids over there to help out if needed. Send me a PM with your e-mail, and we can talk about how best to get started!

Re: Looking for Mentors Twin Cities rookie team 6480

MN Splash is going to be a smashing event. Stop at my class if you want to learn about drivetrains.

As far as mentors are concerned, we are limited ourselves for mentors who can show up frequently. However, our team as a whole (if I can accurately speak for all of them) would be willing to help as much as we can, over email or in person.

For internet resources, the search tool on Chief Delphi is great. There are sooooo many nuggets of gold, from the classic JVN design calculator to the recently posted introduction to electricity document. Simbotics' website has a great range of resources that I browsed through when learning FRC as a new team member. Our website, kingtec2169.com, has a growing amount of resources that we plan to expand on soon as well.

Re: Looking for Mentors Twin Cities rookie team 6480

There are plenty of amazing teams in the Twin Cities area who I am sure would be more than willing to offer help if you need it. (ourselves included)

We have a Mpls Hub, and I know there are a couple of other FRC Hubs in St. Paul and SW Metro. Don't be afraid to reach out to some of these teams, or some of the others who have commented on this thread.

I'll also echo attending MN Splash. There are many great presentations done throughout that day. I'll personally be helping with the Awards and Diversity presentations, but there's bound to be information there as well as representatives from other teams in the metro who can help greatly.

Welcome to the MN FIRST community!

Re: Looking for Mentors Twin Cities rookie team 6480

Oh yeah, speaking of hubs... The Roseville area hub has regular mentor meetings (weekly during the build season, periodically the rest of the year) at the Perkins at Lexington and 694, not too terribly far away if you wanted to join us. I can get you hooked up with the organizer for that if you want!

Another great workshop is jumpstart, hosted by 4607. I don't know if it's too late to sign up for, but the workshop is Dec 3rd.

I would be willing to work with you over the summer if you have plans to be active over the summer. I also have some FRC friends that are currently looking for teams to mentor within about 30 minutes of U of M's campus. Just PM me if you're interested.

Re: Looking for Mentors Twin Cities rookie team 6480

Glad to see all the recommendations for MN Splash in here. We really do try to put on an excellent event for teams, and this year represents a return to the basics for MN Splash-- we're focusing on topics that would be particularly useful for new team members or new teams. In other words, it sounds like it might be very helpful to you if your entire team is new.

It'll be on December 3rd, with more information on our website. Even if you can't make it, we will be posting all the presentations on our website after the event, which might be helpful!

Please reach out if you have any questions about the event or what sessions might be most helpful.

Best of luck in your rookie season!

Re: Looking for Mentors Twin Cities rookie team 6480

Since we're talking about SPLASH and JUMPSTART, everyone might be interested in knowing that Dec 3 is basically FRC training day across MN. In addition to those two, Dunwoody has another of their Saturday Robotics Seminars, and I think the group in La Crosse/La Crescent is doing their training that day as well.

You can find details here: http://mnfirst.org/training

Your team shows a location of Minneapolis, so SPLASH would be your closest event. Stop by my Sensors presentation and introduce yourself if you decide to come.

Thanks for the nod Hutch. We would love to have you at JUMPSTART. We already have three other rookie teams attending and a number of our sessions are directed towards rookie and new teams.

Let me know if you are interested, I will get your team signed up.

Here is a map of the sessions.

Splash is a great event - it was the model that we followed. I don't think you can miss with either event!

Edit: It may be more prudent to go to Splash as it is more local for your team and you may get a better idea of gaining a mentor from that area.
