West Coast Products SS

My team is looking to use the West Coast Products SS gearbox to make a practice drive train. We have finalized everything except what type of sprockets to use in the gearbox. We noticed when you order the gearboxes from either Vex or WCP that it gives you the option for single sprockets. Has any teams tried using Double Sprockets? or is the only option to use 2 single sprockets for a West Coast Drive?

Are you looking to use #35 chain double sprockets? Or #25 chain overall but double sprocket form?

You should be able to make double sprockets work, if that's the case. What makes you think they won't work the same as two singles?

Re: West Coast Products SS

See step 6 of the assembly instructions for the WCP SS West Coast Drive gearbox. Any configuration of sprockets, pulleys, and spacers can be used so long as it adds up to 2.25" and the chain/belts do not rub on the gears or face plates. The provided illustration shows two single sprockets being used in a fashion that allows the inboard chain run a little more space away from the 2nd stage of reduction. I believe this is the assembly method that 1712 used in 2016 for our drivetrain since it facilitated better chain runs elsewhere in our drivetrain (pushing the inboard chain slightly outboard gave us a tiny bit more bellypan real estate).

Re: West Coast Products SS

Remember that the output shaft is 1/2" hex. The VEX / WCP single sprockets have this bore, making it very easy to install them.

Re: West Coast Products SS

Just checked our 2016 machine tonight, and it does use a #35 12t double sprocket. The clearance is a bit tight between the chain, but it's nothing to be worried about if you plan ahead.

They also have double sprockets with .500 hex bore.

Re: West Coast Products SS

We found some gearboxes from Robot Space, but the gear selection was sparse. We Cadded it up to see if it would fit, and after physically putting it in last night, the 12t Double Sprocket #35 will fit, it is tight but it will fit with the correct spacers. I believe once we finish up the basic drivetrain, my team will be posting a picture.
