Re: LOGO search...

A search through: https://www.thebluealliance.com/ would be a good way to check if there are teams already with the same names. The logo will most likely correlate to the name that you select, so this will be a good starting point.

This is definitely the incomplete, wrong way of doing this...but...
Google Image Search for "FRC Team Logo" yields pages of this:

Re: LOGO search...

It's a great idea to check this first. Here's a suggestion:

1. Go to The Blue Alliance (previously linked) and type in the search bar any team names you are thinking of.
2. For each team, check to see if they are still around.
3. Then check to see if they are local (would you be likely to attend the same event.)
4. Find the name that is the most unique after this research, but also fits your needs.

I know some teams need to use a school mascot, but attending an event with three teams with the same name is weird. It's also awkward when a new team (accidentally?) names themselves after an old established team. It's smart that you are thinking about this!

Re: LOGO search...

Additionally, if you guys are trying to create a logo (and an image for your team in general) might I recommend Team 1538 and Team 254's excellent documents on branding.

Re: LOGO search...

I think team logos would actually be a good TBA feature for purposes like these. I opened a request so we'll see where that goes.

Re: LOGO search...

Seeing as you have your location listed as MN, I'd be happy to take a look at any proposed team name/logo and let you know how likely you are to run into something similar in the state. I've been around our events in Minneapolis and Duluth since they started, and should be able to recognize anything that's close to something I've seen there before

Re: LOGO search...

It's covered I'm sure in the 254 and 1538 branding documents, BUT I'm going to pull it out specifically here in the case that y'all don't read the whole thing.

If the school district doesn't mandate it otherwise, try to avoid having your team name be based around your school mascot. There are tons of bears, yellow jackets, wildcats, whatever mascot you (most likely) have around the country - meaning there are also a ton of Robobears, Robojackets, Robocats, etc as well. That in and of itself will largely reduce the chance of having a duplicate name. There are of course exceptions. One of the schools in our district is the Oilers - if were an individual school team, we could conceivably have built around that mascot and still be pretty unique.

You can take this as a "do as I say, not as I do" if you want - our name is Pearadox (based out of Pearland, TX), but there is a Team Paradox and an Inverse Paradox. Even though our spellings, team colors, logos, team numbers, etc are all significantly different - it could lead to some confusion at an event if we both attended.

Re: LOGO search...

With teams now well into the 6000's there are a lot of names out there already taken, some already by multiple teams (of course nothing stops you from reusing a name of another team, defunct or otherwise).

Have you picked a name already? Or are you looking for both a logo and a name?

Last year we spent a lot of time as a team coming up with short lists of names and logo ideas. Names in the short list ranged from ridiculous ("Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies") to the cliché ("PI-RO", using Greek letters, backronym'd to "Pizza In, Robot Out").

One team member was adamant that we didn't select "Cyber-" anything, or "Robo-" anything. He wasn't too amused when I subsequently proposed "CyberBots"
