RI3D is a very good resource to get a starting point, most teams don't use RI3D as a basis for their entire robot, just starting points to create a more refined version.
Starting points are nice.
If said device costs 10x more to manufacture than a simpler solution integrating COTS parts, and only performs 10% better, that's poor engineering. - Cory [more]
