Steamworks Rules Quiz

We put together a quick quiz this morning to spark discussion about rules and scoring. Thought I'd share it here in case it's useful to anyone else. As our understanding of the rules evolves, it may become apparent that there are mistakes on the quiz - if so, please let me know!

Re: Steamworks Rules Quiz

I like this resource. It goes over most of the important game play and robot rules this year.

A couple of minor errors I found were on the scoring questions.

On question 7: I calculated the answer to be 189 points, 3RP. In auto 39 high goals = 39 points. One rotor = 60 points. 30 fuel in high goal in teleop = 30/3 = 10 points. 4 gears on the lift can only start 2 rotors even with the spare gear so that's another 2*40 points. The rope climb does not award any points due to insufficient time. 39+60+10+80=189.

On quesiton 8: According to 7.3 G13 contact between opposing robots in the retrieval zone is a tech foul which is 25 points according to section 4.4.
So the correct answer should be 128 points and 25 foul points.

I of course may be wrong in my calculations so I would appreciate it if someone would double check my work.

Again, for the most part it was really useful, I'll definitely share it with my team. Thanks for putting this together.

Re: Steamworks Rules Quiz

Thanks for the feedback. Let me share how we arrived at these answers:

For question 7:

Auto: 39 Fuel points, 60 Rotor points, 5 Baseline points. This was mistakenly omitted from the description - it is possible to place gears without crossing the baseline. I've corrected that mistake.
Teleop: 10 fuel points, 40 rotors (rotor two requires 2 gears, rotor three requires another 4 gears, which we don't have).
Total = 39 + 60 + 5 + 10 + 40 = 154.

For question 8:

The 25pt tech foul for contact in the retrieval zone is correct. However, there is also another tech foul at play. The question states that the pilots engage two Rotors during Auto, but only 2 Gears were delivered to the Airship during auto. The reader is left to conclude that the Reserve Gear was used by the pilots in auto, generating another tech foul per A05 for a total of 50 foul points.

Re: Steamworks Rules Quiz

For question 7, I think I see a context problem.

During AUTO, a robot can start with up to 10 FUEL. With their being only 3 robots per alliance, their is a maximum of 30 FUEL. It appears that it would be impossible for an alliance to score 39 FUEL during AUTO.

If a team was to somehow score 39 shots, is there another way for the alliance to obtain FUEL during AUTO?

A team could release extra fuel from the hoppers and attempt to score it.

Yet, for this question:

The answer key says "no", but on that other question you take into account that the pilot could do it and take the foul; it's just not worth it at all. So why is that ignored in this question?

Also, there's unclear wording in this question:
Quote:

How many points did the Red alliance score, and how many foul points did the Blue alliance get? *
emphasis mine
"It" presumably refers to the red alliance robot. But does "its" refer to the blue alliance robot, or does it refer to the red alliance robot (it/its in the same sentence)? The answer key seems to indicate that "its" referred to the blue alliance robot, but that wasn't clear.

Well, I'm just nitpicking details. This is a great resource! I enjoyed the trick questions.

Thumbs down Re: Steamworks Rules Quiz

This is a great quiz! My team does a comprehensive rules test at the end of build season, so would you mind if I used some of these?

Re: Steamworks Rules Quiz

I think an update is in order.

"2 Gears delivered to the Airship, cross Baseline. The pilots engage two Rotors during Auto"

Ummm... if only 2 gears get delivered, only ONE rotor can be engaged.

Also, with the baseline moved, I don't think you can deliver a rotor WITHOUT crossing the baseline (as opposed to the original rules).

I think it's appropriate to update the quiz as the rules morph during Q&A and Team Updates.

Thanks for this, though! I do think it's a useful resource!

Please take into account the Reserve Gear. It's entirely possible to start 2 rotors during Auto.

That being said, your opponents thank you for the 25 points you gave them by taking the Reserve Gear out of its slot.

Check rule A05: "PILOTS: don't take the "free" GEAR yet."
