AndyMark DuraOmni upgrade worth it?

Hi. This is our third year, and we're looking to start advancing our drive train technology. Was wondering what the benefits of the AM14U3 6" DuraOmni upgrade would be for our robot exactly?

I assume this is just a better turning circle at the cost of some traction?

That's pretty much it. You'll have a tighter turning radius. Without having a drop center chassis, there is a ton of friction between the rubber wheels and the carpet, especially so for 6 wheel tank drives over 4 wheel tank drives. You're trading some traction and therefore pushing power for maneuverability.

Better turning is one. If you are thinking about building a holonomic drive these would be a good choice. Just be ready for everyone to pounce and say bad things about holodrives.

I've seen one of the Ri3D teams with these wheels and the turn abilities is pretty amazing.

One thing you may want to consider is that a drivetrain consisting of all omniwheels will be very easy to push sideways so it's likely that if any robot wants to hit you from the side you'll end up sliding sideways a fair bit. To deal with this you may want to consider replacing the center Omni wheels with another wheel of the same size that isn't Omni but is something like 6in kop chassis wheels. This will make you harder to push around but will give you the turning benefit of the Omni wheels due to the outside wheels still being Omni wheels

Check out that link again... the upgrade kit comes with 4 omni wheels to replace the corners, with the intention that you would use the traction wheels provided with the KoP chassis in the center.
