Rope Rule question

Before I ask on the Q&A, what are your thoughts on:

Rope - Loop
I04 When “measured end to end” for a looped rope, is that “as looped”, or before looping? Can I have a 10 ft rope, when looped, is only 7 feet long?

Rope - DAVITS
I04 Is there a limit on how much of the rope can be above the DAVITS point? For purposes of min/max length, should it be measured from the DAVITS point, and not the “end “?

If I wanted 2 feet to hang below the DAVITS point, I could put 3 feet of the Rope above the DAVITS Interface.

This is also something I am interested in. The bit that gets me in "be designed/configured to be at least 5ft. 3 in. / to not exceed a length of 8 ft." is the "configured" bit. This says to me that knots and loops might not count toward length (as if you were following individual rope fibers down the rope length), but rather if you just stretch your rope out, whatever ruler length next to it you need is the length (maybe).

Re: Rope Rule question

i think it is as-looped. if you change the looping, it needs reinspection, so it must be inspected in final form.

It is true there does not appear to be a spec for the length between the davit end and the davit knot. I expect this to be clarified.

Re: Rope Rule question

Pretty sure the intent of the length limit is for while its hanging from davit. They don't want you having a rope that interferes with an opponents ability to leave their retrieval zone.

Re: Rope Rule question

I haven't done the math, but there is a minimum length to get the ROPE to attach to the AIRSHIP.

I think the minimum length is such that hanging from the davit, it should just reach the top of a tall robot. the maximum length is such that it might just brush the floor.

Understood. I was trying to give some input to the question of where is the length of rope measured from. I should have probably worded it such that it:
The ROPE must be able to reach the hook and loop strap on the AIRSHIP. I don't know what this length is (Davit --> Launch Pad --> Hook&Loop Strap).

Re: Rope Rule question

From page 20, it looks like the DAVIT is 6'7" from the floor. There is a minor horizontal portion of the DAVIT.

Per I04, page 100, the rope length is 5'3" to 8'0". which means it can be about 1'4" (16 inches) off the floor to 1'5" dragging on the floor.

So, any robot should be able to reach the rope.

Re: Rope Rule question

They're not going to require teams to undo all their elaborate rope-knotting for inspection. Therefore, the length requirement must be with knots.

Actually, looking at the drawings here, the rope starts at 4'10' of the ground + maybe 2 inches for where the rope will set on top of the touchpad. It appears the shortest rope will still have at least 3 inches on the ground.

Re: Rope Rule question

I don't think so. The touchpad is 4'10" from the floor, but the DAVIT is higher than that (the rope runs down through the middle of the touchpad assembly). I think the davit is 6'7" from the floor.

Wow... thanks. We built one of these in our lab and I don't think we realized it was secured to the Davit. We were under the impression it was secured at 4' 10" right above the plate but now I see that isn't the case. I'll bring this up tomorrow to my team. Thanks.
