Update your Build Progress - Week 1

Warning! Crazy number of questions ahead:

How are things going for your team? What game objectives have you decided to complete? What kinds of mechanisms have you prototyped? What's worked well/hasn't worked well? What drivetrain have you selected?

If you are far enough along in the process: What is your expected hopper size? Firing rate? Do you have a Gear ground pickup? Can Gears fall out of your robot if you get hit hard enough? Do you depend on the pilot to get gears out of your robot? Any other cool things you've done?

A quick easy (red) button for switching auton configurations?

Kidding aside, it's cool!

Re: Update your Build Progress - Week 1

Our team is loathing the fact that we had Friday off for an ice day and the building was closed, when we ended up with no ice. We could've at least had a whole day meeting if there was no school. And there's still very little ice (enough to not affect driving) and the building is still closed today. So there goes at least 7 hours of meeting time for nothing. At least we will still have all day Monday.

But besides that, the week has been good.

Re: Update your Build Progress - Week 1

Due to snow, our team had its first full in-shop meeting yesterday. So it has been a disappointing week. However, we did get a lot of early CAD and strategic analysis done, and we are catching up on prototypes rapidly.

CADD is mostly done. We are using the kit base but creating a custom belly pan to maximize the width. We plan to get gears from the LZ (and have the pilot remove them) but not the floor as we shuttle back and forth getting gears the robot will be in taking fuel in to a hopper of capacity 35(apx. ) we will dump it in the lower boiler goal in about a second. We will climb. So far we have pretty good idea how we are doing. Everything except climbing. There is a spot in the robot for the mechanism, just no mechanism yet.

The goal is to finish by the end of week 4 and get 2 weeks of auto programming (place gear on any peg) and drive practice in.

Re: Update your Build Progress - Week 1

I wasn't at the meeting yesterday...I was at the Roadkill Zip Tie Drags in Tucson. That was fun!

But by Friday, we had a pretty good start on a gear/climb robot. We have a design for the climber mostly roughed in with CAD, and a first attempt at the gear handling thing half way done in plywood/lumber prototype (no CAD guys on that subteam). We have a rough idea of how big we expect the robot to be (small), and found the CAD models of the kit chassis but have not yet virtually cut them to the proper size. We also have a prototype chassis coming along nicely, using the leftover parts from the 2015 robot, including the electronics box with most of the electronics in it, as well as a pneumatics board, all plumbed.

So, we're about where I expected us to be.

The fun thing about fuel, is that we are doing our best to ignore it. Although the first experiment we did, involved driving the robot to the wall with all of our 12 fuel in the way. Looks like we kind of want to make the robot so it will do it's job with fuel on the floor, between the bumper and the side of the arena.

Re: Update your Build Progress - Week 1

As of Saturday afternoon, we had solidified our primary strategy and goals, set our form factor, and made enough chassis decisions that we're ordering wheels and belts and such. Successful prototypes of our gear handler and rope snagger for the climber that works with several samples of nylon line and strap (and a few spectacular failures). We should have a functional chassis ready for drive practice within a few hours of getting the order to the shop. Feeder station, rope mockup, and peg/lift assemblies going well, should be ready in time for the robot. We're on schedule - how'd that happen?

Re: Update your Build Progress - Week 1

Our team has decided on our strategy and gameplay approach. We are currently building our KOP drive train. As a rookie mentor on a rookie team, it's awesome to see a passionate group of students who've really come together and grown since they started in the preseason.

Re: Update your Build Progress - Week 1

We have CAD! some of our students spent the last year working REALLY hard to learn Solidworks (several even passed their first certification test, with flying colors), and yesterday they had lovely drawings of the chassis, gear-pickup-and-placement gizmo, and other basic parts of the robot. It was so exciting to SEE what they are going to build! And so great for them to have the experience of exploring and modifying the design on paper, before building it. And to see and check size and weight, too.

Some prototyping had been done in cardboard, the basic chassis for our drive mule started, and lots of discussion about climbing mechanisms was ongoing. We've decided on a size constraint (we're going with the larger, shorter box, but not filling it at all - we just want a little room to extend out of the perimeter to dump a hopper of fuel and hang the gear), and we'll be using mecanum wheels (we always do, since our swerve experiment was a disaster - maybe in a few years we'll try again to do a new kind of drive system, but this year mecanum should be just fine, so no need to add complexity to our process on that front).

Project management is all organized, and we have basically figured out how we are going to get our robot to the mainland and back without shipping or drayage assistance from FIRST (a huge new hurdle for Hawaii teams this year, apparently none of us got transport exemptions, which was quite a bummer since we spent HUNDREDS of hours over the summer and fall building an awesome new crate, which we basically had to scrap entirely). But fortunately we are having the smallest and lightest robot ever, so that helps.

If all goes as planned (hah!), our robot will be about 75 lbs. without bumpers or battery. Light enough to fly, properly packed, as an oversize checked bag on most airlines. We may have to remove a gizmo and use 2 bags/boxes to fit the size constraints.

I think we're basically on schedule.

Re: Update your Build Progress - Week 1

Ahead of last year, mainly waiting for parts. I think we have the design down and just a matter of prototyping the subcomponents. Hope to have a finished bot in three more weeks.

Re: Update your Build Progress - Week 1

We have dodged all of the snow so far, so we're pushing ahead as fast as possible with a simple strategy: best in our district at 1 thing.

Drive train frame parts were CNC'ed, cut and off to welding.
Drive train gearboxes were assembled, debugged, and tuned until they pull barely more current than the CIMs are supposed to at free speed.
Mechanisms prototypes are complete and self-powered (motor/gearbox connected).
Completed Crayola CAD for mechanisms so space integration has started.
Electronics layout is generally complete.
Programmers are using last year's practice bot to do motion profiling, drive straight, multiple drive configurations for different drivers, comms, and other such shenanigans. They may beg/plead/borrow/steal for 900's game piece vision tracking...

We should be able to survive a week of snow delays and still produce a quality robot.
