Re: ANNOUNCING: CheapGears

Very nice! Why the 18.5* pressure angle though? Wouldn't that make the gears incompatible with most FRC gears, which has 20* and 14.5* pressure angles?

Most gears, period. This is the first I've heard of an 18.5 degree pressure angle being used in any application. 20 degrees is more common in industry, though 14.5 was the standard for a very long time, and is still used in all COTS 20dp FRC gears I know of.

This is a subtle difference, and a lot of teams aren't going to realize why these gears aren't working with their current stock when they arrive, or if forced together, causing premature wear. I would wager that a significant number of students currently designing mechanisms have never heard of pressure angle because standardization has meant they've never had to learn about it for FRC purposes, and will assume that these are compatible with AM/Vex gears they already have. Which is a shame, because the price and selection is wonderful, and would help make custom geared systems more accessible to many teams.

Ohh, you wanted CompatibleGears, not CheapGears. Easy mistake, happens all the time.

Cheap gears*

*they also don't work with any other gears on the market, meaning you only can buy gears from us from now on

Yes, very embarrassing mistakes happen all the time. The gears are in fact 14.5degree PA. Correcting the internet may take some time.

No gear wars.

As a machinist, I've always wanted to learn about making gears. The only way I could justify buying a hobbing attachment was to try to sell a few. So here I am. I've got one hobbing attachment and a whole lot of typos to fix.

Nice, we will give them a shot. Geting free shipping through amazon prime will save a few bucks.

Re: ANNOUNCING: CheapGears

What hobber do you have? Any pics of your gear making setup?
One day I want to make my own gear broaching system, but that's a pipe dream for the far future... you're living the dream.

Re: ANNOUNCING: CheapGears

Love the blue (naturally).

I'm also curious how you're making them. Do you have a CNC lathe with live tooling and you're hobbing that way? Do you rotary broach the hexes in the same setup? I always enjoy seeing what machines other people are using, would 2nd the request to see your setup.

I see you have very limited quantities of gears available on Amazon. Are you concerned you will not meet the qualifications of a vendor, for BOM cost accounting purposes?

Looks like a good place to find gears similar to VexPro for cheaper. How's your international shipping?
