ANNOUNCING: CheapGears
I am now making aluminum gears. Visit CheapGears for details. Most items are available on Amazon Prime. Follow the link on the CheapGears page or search "cheapgears" on Amazon. Gears are hobbed from 7075 AL and PTFE coated. ![]() |

Re: ANNOUNCING: CheapGears
Very nice! Why the 18.5* pressure angle though? Wouldn't that make the gears incompatible with most FRC gears, which has 20* and 14.5* pressure angles?

This is a subtle difference, and a lot of teams aren't going to realize why these gears aren't working with their current stock when they arrive, or if forced together, causing premature wear. I would wager that a significant number of students currently designing mechanisms have never heard of pressure angle because standardization has meant they've never had to learn about it for FRC purposes, and will assume that these are compatible with AM/Vex gears they already have. Which is a shame, because the price and selection is wonderful, and would help make custom geared systems more accessible to many teams. Last edited by Joe G. : 15-01-2017 at 20:57. |

No gear wars. As a machinist, I've always wanted to learn about making gears. The only way I could justify buying a hobbing attachment was to try to sell a few. So here I am. I've got one hobbing attachment and a whole lot of typos to fix. |

Re: ANNOUNCING: CheapGears
What hobber do you have? Any pics of your gear making setup?
One day I want to make my own gear broaching system, but that's a pipe dream for the far future... you're living the dream. ![]() |

Re: ANNOUNCING: CheapGears
Love the blue (naturally).
I'm also curious how you're making them. Do you have a CNC lathe with live tooling and you're hobbing that way? Do you rotary broach the hexes in the same setup? I always enjoy seeing what machines other people are using, would 2nd the request to see your setup. I see you have very limited quantities of gears available on Amazon. Are you concerned you will not meet the qualifications of a vendor, for BOM cost accounting purposes? |

Re: ANNOUNCING: CheapGears
Looks like a good place to find gears similar to VexPro for cheaper. How's your international shipping?
