It's also a bit off-putting that it can't pick fuel up off the ground.

But the climber is cool; I didn't realize the tall volume was tall enough to do that.

My version of an MCC is just a gear mechanism (maybe even static if it's reliable), a good climber, and a standard chassis. Help your alliance get 12 gears, then play defense until it's time to climb.
Considering shifting gearboxes are a COTS item, I would. Also the lack of ground intake is what makes this part of an MCC because it's easy to implement.

Not having shifting gearboxes is, in itself, unlikely to prevent a team from being competitive.

Don't get me wrong, I like shifters as much as the next guy, but to say they're the minimum requirement to have a competitive drive train/robot is somewhat ridiculous.

Edit: Still some really cool work by the folks at WCP-- I've looked forward the past few years to seeing what you come up with for an MCC, and it's always interesting. Keep up the good work!

Really neat stuff, I like how 2009 it looks with that hopper/dumper system.

What was your motivation to not build a floor intake for fuel?

I wasn't that involved last year, but where there any teams last year that used your MCC robot or at least certain subsystems?

Yeah the mechanism was designed to go vertical to the plane of the bumper, in the video we just had manual control so it rotated a little farther. The guys tried cutting the panel shorter where it was mechanically impossible to break the plane and it works well too. No difference in performance.

We basically wanted to create a robot that was easy enough for anyone to build without any cnc machines or mill/lathe abilities and that would be a perfect third pick for any alliance at the championship level. We should probably change the name to MCC+ or something

We shared the view that the robot must:

1. Have a shifting transmission to play defense and zip around the field. Can use ball shifter, dog shifter etc... Single speed could work as well. There are a ton of cots option, just pick one and go!

2. Have a feeder load gear mechanism. We thought the floor mechanism was too difficult to pull off and added complexity. The current mechanism is manually driven with no feedback and is very very easy to build. It probably works better than our team's current ground loader!

3. Ability to hopper load and dump balls into low goal, this is probably lowest on our priority list but figured it would be fun to see how it worked out. Also teams could contribute by dumping balls in auto.

4. Ability to hang will be a must, especially as a 3rd pick at the championship level.. We wanted to see if there was a simple way of doing this and if it was possible to do it in a single pull/linear slide. Also who doesn't love elevators! Really wanted one since our 2017 robot won't have one......

Good Luck to all teams this season!

Re: WCP MCC Robot 2017 powered by VEXpro!

If being fast, and needing to push are advantageous for a game, then shifting should be on the table. It is part of kit bot on steroids, and should be in the mix for an MCC most years. It can be a bit costly, but with so many COTS solutions, it is easy to integrate. If you are leaning towards an MCC due to budget, shifters are not where I would spend my first $500, but they would likely be in the mix for the next $500 to $800 of budget.

A gear runner that can play defense would have been my MCC with the team trying to figure out a simple climb, which I think you guys nailed. I am really impressed how cleanly you found a climb that uses the field provided style ropes.

There are several other simple concepts a team can go after. Unfortunately this year, most simple concepts have a 50/50 shot of being useful to a high performing alliance. Some alliance may want some gears to be run, others might want a large storage volume or floor cleanup. Climbing is universally useful, so worth having in the mix for an MCC, especially if you can make it reliable.

As a reminder to folks, trying to do everything tends to lead to attempting a lot of things poorly.
Competitively speaking, it is better to be good at a couple things, the mediocre or poor at a lot of things typically.

Did I read that right? Currentlimit was used for one of the mechanisms? That's a new talon SRX feature for this season so that's cool to see.

For the climber, isn't there a lot of force on that cylinder rod? Does it bend under the load over time?

Great video and robot! Thanks for the existential crisis this video awakened in me with regards to our initial design review!
