Well, there is still a benefit to a 2 gear auto. It means you start teleop with that additional gear, so you have one fewer to place during that period. It also provides evidence during quals of your robot's autonomous ability. If I'm in a picking position and have a choice between a team that successfully placed a gear in every match, versus one that only did it half the time because the second gear "had no benefit", I would pick the one that did it every time.
