My favourite, which would be a good one to recreate for this year.

Spartan Robotics, using a wheel from a racing sim. Especially impressive since it got them to Worlds in 2015, where control was the game.

Also, one of the Einstein teams (maybe Beach Bots) used a guitar hero controller for scaling the castle last year.

There's a number of teams that use racing wheels; off the top of my head 16 and 1678 come to mind.

Yeah, racing wheels are definitely a viable option. Requires a bit of closed loop programming, but can be a very cool way to drive a bot.

Re: Crazy Driverstations

While it wasn't crazy as the season progressed, I remember seeing 3419's driver station during week 6 last year and thinking it was nuts. They had a HUGE (like >30") display and a camera pole. I thought it was nuts and there was no way it would be legal.

Turns out it was. For like two weeks. From what I hear TVR ruled it unsafe while NYC had no problem with it.

Yeah, the wheel + throttle drive system is really nice!

You don't actually need closed loop to do it though - it's completely workable as open loop as well.

The nice part about it is that it encourages you to keep your velocity as you turn, instead of doing the drive-turn-drive that a lot of people driving tank tend to do.

I saw one from team 341 "Miss Daisy" a number of years ago that was covered with artificial turf and a few flowers growing out of it.

This is accurate.

On this note, has it been determined if this is legal to do again this year? With the airships obstructing the view as badly as they do I could see how it would be useful to have.

There was a team in 2007 that had a fully articulated arm that was controlled by a "gauntlet" the driver wore that allowed the robot to mimic the arm movements of the driver.
The only downside was that the mechanism was so heavy they could only put a hook at the end of the arm, making it somewhat ineffective (but very cool to watch).

What was the limit last year (after the team update that changed it from "no limit")?

Re: Crazy Driverstations

My alma mater always does a really nice driver's station. I couldn't find any pictures of the one from 2016, but here is the one from 2015! We always got many compliments on it, but I'm sad there's none of 2016.

In 2016, we had a 24 in monitor on our driver's station in addition to the graphics.
