Re: California District Proposal, Rev 2
Summers come and gone. We've hade plenty of time to digest the messages from the FIRST districts road show. I'm glad they came out to talk with us. I addition, we've had time to do some off season volunteer training and casting a wider net for KEY volunteers.
Is anyone making plans for a formal or informal group discussion during their regionals? I'll be at three or four. And, I'm hoping to make contact with some of the active thinkers. My takeaway from the summer presentations is that CA districts will be a grass roots effort. But to make progress, we have to figure out how to overcome geography and leverage our diversity. Any thoughts or plans to share? |

IIRC, two of the 3-4 top issues were directors (board of), or the lack thereof, and I want to say that a slightly less pressing one was the (lack of) Key Volunteers, and I can't recall offhand what the other two were. |

Thanks for bringing this topic back to forefront. Here are a few things I'd like to address: 1) For anyone not able to attend one of the sessions in CA last November, the Sacramento session is on our youtube channel (Video is in four parts, part one here) 2) EricH is right, Board of Directors and Volunteer Base are two of our areas to improve, along with Fundraising Capital (California Regionals, as a whole, were in the red in 2016). Explanation starts at around 23 minute mark in part one of our recording. 3) Will this be a "grass roots effort"? Yes and no. But importantly, no. No, it cannot be a grass roots effort. California needs, and I mean absolutely needs, Regional Director initiative in order to move to districts. This is NOT a chicken and egg situation. There is no questions of which comes first. If the RD's in California will not commit to a timeline and set of actions in order to go to districts, it will not happen. RD's hold the "keys to the kingdom", we cannot move forward without RD buy in and leadership. For me, that means my personal time into the CA Districts effort is not worth investing until RD's commit to a plan to move to districts. I'm very thankful for all the conversations that have come out of the proposal, and especially grateful to the many individuals who contributed to the proposal. Thank you, thank you, thank you. At this point, the ball is not in our court. If you see me at CVR, Sac, or Las Vegas this spring, I'd love to chat. Best, -Mike |

Re: California District Proposal, Rev 2
Thank you Michael.
And on the south end, it would be worth organizing chat sessions throughout, and at Madera. I'll be at San Diego, Long Beach, and Irvine and would like to meet the faces behind the handles. Joe Petito FRC 1197 |

Re: California District Proposal, Rev 2
I'll throw in my $0.02.
I don't think the ball is completely out of your hands (the community). The people that want to make this happen needs to get involved, join a local regional committee, help recruit volunteers, do what you can to make the regionals successful and easier on the volunteers that have been working tirelessly to put these regionals together (note that it is a small group that puts these things together year after year). Understand what it takes and look for efficient way to adapt to the district model in the long run. For example, one of the challenges to district model is the # of volunteers. I can tell you if there is a reliable group that jumps in and helps with planning and execution of the events and ease the work load for the existing small crew of organizers, maybe over the next couple of years, volunteers won't be seen as such a critical issue. But the fact that even simple events like FLL and FTC qualifiers have difficulty filling positions with frequent last minute emails out to the community to ask for volunteers (and often times still fall short), that makes the thought of staffing 15 district events becomes a impossible objective. One thing to keep in mind is that as more teams join FRC in California, the more difficult it will be to convert to a district model (more fields, more volunteers, more events). but until the major concerns can be addressed, districts are not likely to happen. |

Re: California District Proposal, Rev 2
If RD's do not want to go to districts, and I want to go to districts, will CA go to districts?
No. If RD's want to go to districts, and I do not want to go to districts, will CA go to districts? Yes. Who has all the authority in this situation? FIRST HQ will tell you the same thing I'm saying, because it's what FIRST HQ told me, the buck stops with our RD's. . All other topics have been hashed out on this thread and others. Volunteers, venues, money. They are real issues, but they are surmountable. RDs who won't plan a transition is insurmountable. This is reality. Thanks for sharing more perspectives. I am trying to give as clear a picture for anyone who wants to know what actually needs to happen. Ask your RDs to commit! Or at least commit to committing? Or give you metrics on what they want to see before they commit to committing? Best, -Mike |

Re: California District Proposal, Rev 2
As you all realize, this is a thing of nuts and bolts and rivets, not a CAD program for drawing pretty stuff.
Mike has it right for many of us: "For me, that means my personal time into the CA Districts effort is not worth investing until RD's commit to a plan to move to districts." The RD personalities are themselves overwhelmed with requirements while keeping down a day job, and the rest of us with few exceptions do the same. I too must put the discussion on the shelf unless/until there is movement in the tectonic plates on which the organization rests. But now, time to work: SCRRF is hosting the Pre-Bag Scrimmage at Valencia High School Feb. 18-19th. Rookie teams are free. Financial problems? No problem-contact one of us. Excess funding goes toward student scholarships: http://larobotics.org/Scrimmage2017.html If you want to be the next generation of FRC event leaders, check in early and we'll put you to work.
