iheartlinux has a spectacular aura aboutiheartlinux has a spectacular aura about
Some more history:
1994 Champions : P&G and WHHS (modern team 144)
1996 Chairman's & Autodesk: P&G and WHHS
1998:
Team 144 went to a new school, Northwest High,
and thanks to great alliance partners:
2001 National Finalists
2002 Division Champs & National Semi-Finals
2003:
Spun off new team #1038, Lakota East High School

We (1038) have the same mentors from P&G that have been in it since 1994.

The original powerhouses...

With his last post, iheartlinux outlined one heck of a team. Most people remember Sunny Delight from the Tower Power video and beyond. Back when I first started, they were the team to beat. I've always called them the original powerhouse team. Which brings up another question...who would you consider to be the original powerhouse teams in FIRST?

Thanks, Ed... but to clarify:

National champ, yes
Founding team, yes
Chairman's Award Winner - Regional only (Midwest, 2002)

We were close to the Chairman's Award in '95, but did not get it.

Andy B.

What a help!

Guys, a LOT of information can be found on this true internet gem:

Internet Time Machine

The best links are the 98-99 ones, which contain info from the 1992 competition and on.

Hope that helps.

Is the Delphi office in Troy, though? I know our team was registered in Troy at one point, too, because that's where our sponsor was from.

I was looking to start a team for my college for next year, but they got hooked up with a local JR High school doing BEST Robotics competition. Has anyone heard of this?
I was previously on the Technokats from 1998- 2002.

This Alliance could consistently balance two goals (one human player filled), with two big balls on top, and 4 bots in the end zone in under a minute.
I still enjoy watching those tapes :-) (I wasn't on the team at the time). We still keep "The Champ" as we now call it in working order, and it served as a good prototype for this years robot, limboing and all. It's on its last legs now, we had an emberassing breakage during an exhibition a month back.

original powerhouse

to answer Andy Grady's question....

We started in 1997, and from watching tapes of the '96 competition we really thought of Tigerbolt (RIT-Edison Tech) as the powerhouse team.

When we got to our first regional ever (Rutgers, '97, what a blast) they were pretty near us in the pits, so we often looked over their way to see what they were up to. (This was pre-alliance days so imho teams were not as forthcoming about their capabilities and weaknesses.)

We were geared for decent speed, and in one of the early matches they pushed us around with their better torque. Because of that, we geared it down for Nationals.

Ah, memories of the days when the window motor was considered powerful....

Ken
