Yes, using a raw HC chip is difficult, but as the HandyBoard has proven, that complexity can be elimintated with additional hardware and software. Using a Handyboard with IC, you can be up and running within minutes (although I was using the HandyBoard's built in H-bridge, I was sending PWM signals to servos using the built in functions without any trouble).
