College First Teams

I am looking at potential colleges for next year and would like to find one with an active FIRST team. How many colleges have first teams? Is there a list somewhere of what schools have teams? Thanks.

Hmmm....

You are looking for a college with a FIRST team now? I hope you are a junior because very few colleges accept somebody on such a short notice.

Anyways, I know there are groups in colleges that help support FIRST teams. Georgia tech is the biggest, umm I've heard Drexel has, UCF has a couple of people that go to a school that is 4 minutes away and help but dead line to get into UCF for fall has passed. I heard 3 years ago that MIT helped a team once, i don't know if they still do. You should look at colleges where regionals are held. There should be a lot of support for FIRST teams there.

Don't forget the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Team 171. It has one of the best engineering colleges in the midwest.

while by no means a complete listing, check out FIRST's website on scholarships http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2003...hipsummary.htm I'm fairly certain that all colleges having FIRST scholarships have FIRST teams, but I might be wrong. Either way, it still a good resource to look at!

Georgia Tech was an active team that was extremely helpful in putting the Peachtree Regional together this year.

Whatever happened to Buzz U? This was a web site which listed many college sponsored teams, team members who were attending colleges, contact information for most college sponsored teams.

You can also go to the map on FIRST's site and click on states to see which teams are available in that area. Most college sponsored teams will appear pretty obviously.

Here's a short list of teams which I know are college sponsored or college run.
171: University of Wisconsin at Plattsville
190: Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)
229: Clarkson University
356: University of Arkansas at Little Rock
Hendrix College
500: US Coast Guard (did they used to be a lower number team?)
677: Ohio State (did they used to be a lower number team?)
832, 1002, 1127: Georgia Tech
906: University of Missouri at Rolla

I thought Virginia Tech had an active team, but couldn't find them on FIRST's site. I know there are dozens more teams with college sponsors. I don't know how active the college students are on the teams though.

Someone should compile a list of First teams which are sponsored by colleges and run by college kids helping and such.

I know there is 1020 sponsored by Ballstate and 1064 is college sponsored (cant think of the name of the school right now, but Kevin who used to be on 71 is involved in that team and i think DJ is going to school there next year) and there is still 461. And michigan tech has a team as well.

As Josh said, I am on 1064 now, which is partly sponsored by MSOE (Milwaukee School of Engineering) . Marquette University, also here in Milwaukee, is sponsoring a new team as well (1220 I believe??). The Michigan Tech team is 857.

Indeed, Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana sponsors team #1020. I would recommend this team to anyone who is interested in majoring in something other than engineering and something non-technical. (And on the plus side, their team is totally run by the high school students, so any effort you put in is what you get out of it... i.e. you can still have time to adjust to college, put your feet up, and relax a while before diving right into the build season.)

I believe the kids are welcoming any mentors, BSU or otherwise.

If they paid us, it might take the fun out of it...
