SCRRF Machining Classes

Probably 5 weeks of classes, 12 hours a week, possibly Tue, Fri and Sat, college credit, $11 charge, downtown LA at Los Angeles Trade Tech.
Team 1115 has made these classes available, and I don't know how many of their team are going.
Beach Cities Robotics has 8 people going.

Hey its david.

For those of you who don't know me, your team did me a favor by sending me to phoenix with you. This class comming up is how to learn to CNC, i think. Anyway, its for my search and Rescue robot team, but we need a lot more people to make it a class, so anyone is welcome. It appears it is during the school year, within these last 6 weeks. Read ahead and tell me if you are interested. Include your Names/phone number/email adress so I can tell you the times you need to come.

Everyone!

Ian and I went to Los Angeles Trade Tech EARLY this morning (I've been up since
5 am for you...you BETTER appreciate it!!!!) :-)

We had a great meeting with Instructor Steve Shibuya. Turns out he's already interested
in search and rescue robots, and is MORE than happy to assist us! Currently, he's going
to machine the motor pod plates (by tomorrow? TBD), so we can start assembling
our drive trains. AND!!!! He's willing to CREATE A CLASS for you so YOU can
learn how to use the machines and DO THE MACHINING YOURSELF!!!

Here's the GOOD NEWS about this:

5-week course;
you'll earn college credit;
FREE (to the H.S. students. Adults will have to pay, but it will still be cheap. And
everyone will have to pay an $11 health fee.);
you'll be covered under the school's liability policy (this is the ONLY way they'll
let you touch any of the machinery); and
Mr. Shibuya will ask other engineers to assist us in our robot build.
Here are the challenges:

we're talking 12 classroom hours per week...tentatively Tuesday evenings,
Friday afternoon / evenings, and/or Saturdays. Check your schedule, and
let me know if / how you could work in 12 hours of class time.
the school will want at least 25 people to participate in the class. (No, we
don't have to make them all members of the team). Invite ANYONE you
know that is interested in RoboCup, US FIRST, etc.
the school is downtown, near Washington and Flower, so transportation could
be an issue;
both your parents AND your school (e.g. a counselor) have to sign off on it.

I KNOW, with finals coming up for many of you, the timing is rough. Consider, though,
that we'd have to put in the build time anyway...might as well do it at a well-equipped
facility, surrounded by experts, and get college credit for the effort!

I VALUE YOUR FEEDBACK. How will this work for you?

Mike

Subject: [RoboEducators] LATTC ROBOTICS CLASS CANCELLED
Importance: High

Everyone (especially those who pre-registered):

I am VERY sad to report that the robotics summer classes at LATTC have been cancelled.
Due to California State budget cuts, the school simply doesn't have the money...for now. This
came as a BIG surprise (and disappointment) to me today -- it seemed like "all systems go".
My sincere apologies to you for any inconvenience or disappointment this news may cause.
I did everything I could.

Your response has been tremendous - 30 people pre-registered, with more expressing
interest. I'll continue to work with LATTC officials through the summer to create a
fall course, starting in September. (One night a week). For those of you who pre-registered,
I'll keep your info on file (with your permission), and notify you of course details as they
become available.

In the meantime, please visit our team website: www.scarabs.org , for updates on the
progress of our search-and-rescue robot. (One of the instructors at LATTC is machining
the parts for us). Better yet, I invite you to attend our team meetings and lend your
assistance!

Thank you again for your interest and support. I will keep you informed re. future classes.
