IRI Scoring Odds & Ends

For those of you who are interested, here are just a few statistics regarding the current IRI setup:
Teams: 48
Matches per Team: 9
Total Matches: 108
Avg Break Between Matches: 10.2 matches
Min Break Between Matches: 5
Max Break Between Matches: 23

Also, to let everyone know, the matches are being generated using the "method 99" code developed by yours truly. It turns out FIRST had some time to work it into the FileMaker program itself, and is now the default option when generating matches in the postseason code. More discussion about how this exactly works can be found in this thread.

As is the normal case, I've made a few small changes to the code...

1. The most important for the IRI - The option to have straight best two out of three in the elims is now there

2. I've made a few changes to the pit display as well...it now scrolls the lower portion of the rankings screen by the page, and not just by the line. The middle section, which shows a single team, with their ranking and all of their information, works as before. Also, I made the lower rankings portion slightly larger, making it easier to read.

Also, with the availability of wireless networking equipment for the event network on site, I'm debating whether or not to write a web-based system which would allow teams access to detailed rankings information, similar to what I did last year. Would there be an interest in this?

Oh bless you, I remember how horrible it was standing there waiting for the teams to go through one by one...That will be nice

We would use wireless if it was avalible, it was nice not to have to walk all the way over to the screen, it enchances laziness

Disclaimer & Other Info

First, the standard disclaimer that I should have included with the information I gave above

DISCLAIMER: All information provided in this thread regarding match pairings for IRI is TENTATIVE information. It may, and most likely will, change before the actual event.

Also, I wanted to clarify what I meant in regards to the wireless capability. If you bring a laptop computer or other device with a 802.11b wireless networking adaptor, there will most likely be a web server running on site which will allow you real time access to a team's match schedule, rankings information, and detailed results from each match. At this point I say "most likely" due to the fact that with the new filemaker system, it's not quite as easy to access the data from IIS as it was when the data was in access, so I'm looking at a few different options at this point. What will come out of it remains to be seen. But, even if the interest isn't that great, I will probably put something together as a proof of concept, just to say I figured out how it could be done. Enjoy!

Nate,

Thanks for posting the above info.

All,

Each team may not get 9 matches... we still need to work this out. I think that Nate is figuring for us to run a 5 minute cycle time like FIRST does... but we usually run more like 6-6.5 minutes per match. Therefore, teams may get 7-9 matches for qualifications.

I wouldn't mind if you created the web based system for displaying all pertinent data again. I want to see it in action!

Imagine teams at FIRST events putting up displays re echoing the stats from their last match, their current rank, etc.. its a cool thing.

Update 7/6/03 2:35pm

Initial testing shows 8 matches per team with a 6 min cycle. The system doesn't like fractional cycle times.

Also, i just figured out the trick to web publishing in filemaker...so I will have at least SOMETHING up...

Can some one tell me if the spirit award is going to be judged on the new or old F.I.R.S.T. merits.

I don't know what this question means.

IRI judges do what they want... they are experienced at being IRI judges or they have experience as FIRST team members. FIRST has no influence on IRI judges.

Your question may be best answered by this award:

In 2001, the IRI spirit award was awarded to a team who travelled all the way from WPI (team 190) with 4 team members. They competed well and had a good time at the event. However, they were not a team who constantly cheered and danced. The IRI judges appreciated their "spirit" to compete and awarded them the Spirit award for making the effort to come all the way from Mass. to play.

So... the awards are on IRI merits.

It's also obvious that they're more qualified than FIRST judges.
