adobe illustrator

This is my first time using adobe illustrator and I'm wondering how to make rounded edges on a picture. I figured out how to make the edges of a rectangular round but when i tried that on a picture, i just got a solid colour, usually white or black. I also wasn't sure how to import a picture on there so i used photoshop to open the picture, then i just copy/ppasted it into illustrator. I'd like to know the proper way to do it.

i'm not sure how to use illustrator but i bet like all the other programs out there, it has a masking feature; reading what you wrote i am assuming you already know how to make a rounded box; so make a rounded box with the shape of your picture, and then take your photo and mask it with your rounded box; sorry i can't be more detailed; i'm sure an adobe product would have these features but i dont have it myself so cant look at it in detail

haha, like i did on my info packet?

<shameless plug>http://www.harker-robotics.org/hrtpacket04web.pdf</shameless plug>

make a rounded rectangle, and position it over the picture. then select both of them and go to edit -> clipping mask -> make.

and you're set. if you wanna get rid of it, select it and go to edit -> clipping mask -> release

done.

oh, and for importing pictures. there's no "proper" way to do it. copying and pasting works, as does opening it illustrator (by dragging the file onto the app) and copying and pasting between documents (don't know if that's better than the other, but that's the way i do it. illustrator seems to have its own clipboard, so it might be better.)
