It varies by state, but in CA for the entry level EMT-Basic certification it is usually about 150 hours of classroom training and 30-45 hours in the field practicing your skills. Then you take a county EMT exam and if you pass you are certified.
As far as the requirements to work in the inner city, all you need is the EMT certification and some guts.
