QotW 08-17-03: Heigh-ho

This question is coming at you from the dairy fields of Wisconsin, America's beloved Cheese State.

Today, long time watcher and first time writer (LTWFTW), Joey L., asks,

Question of the Week 08-17-03: What, if anything, did you do for a summer job?

Were you able to work alongside your team's sponsor or do something else interesting and exciting? Was it just another summer lifeguarding at the community pool? Flipping burgers?

I'll be away next week, so your regularly scheduled question of the week will be provided by JVN. Enjoy!

I ended a system administrator job at CraftMaster Manufacturing back in June. The rest of the summer (while I was well enough) I worked at Bonanza (Steakhouse) and a Bed and Breakfast that I grew up in.

Hopefully, no more crummy food related jobs in the future!

Everybody's gonna hate me for this...

This summer I worked at Hamilton Sundstrand with the EMU guys
(the Space Suit, Hamilton designed and fabricated it)

I've had this one huge task all summer. What it is, is to look into past history and double check on all the Engineering Changes made since the program started (change in design), and make sure all of them had some kind of testing done, some convincing rationale, or deem the EC non life-threatening.

This task was a necessity because of what happened on Columbia. Apparently having the tile hit the wing was a circumstance when somebody did some physics and calculus and figured that it wouldn't do much damage. Things like this happens... but it can't hurt to double check. We do our best to prevent anything from going wrong.

"Do it right the FIRST time."

p.s. I was a life guard two summers ago, uck!

This summer I created a new website for our team (I guess when the old one is 3 years old w/ only 1 picture, it needs to be updated), of course the road clean-up, working on the museum, and of course, the ever essential activity for summer (lets be realistic here) SLEEPING!!!!!!!!!

This summer I worked for Clarkson University. I got a research grant for the Physics Department, and spent the summer writing a new laboratory experiment for the Freshman Physics class (PH131).

Basically, the lab is designed to be a more open-ended experiment, involving projectile motion. It is designed to challenge students to model the vertical motion of a dart as it exits from a spring-loaded toy gun. There is no *right* solution, and students will be encouraged to learn at their own pace. This is part of a new "learning trend" at Clarkson that I'm glad to be a part of.

This summer was really a vacation for me . I didn't have very strict hours, and got to do whatever I want (including trips home, to Battlecry, and to IRI).

Previous 3 summers I have worked as a CAD draftsman. I put in 40-50 hours a week doing engineering/drafting work for a small firm that works in the pulp&paper industry. (I spent a lot of time measuring up/drawing equipment in paper-mills.) It was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot.

Before that...
yeah... I lifeguarded.
Get this guys: They PAY you to sit on the beach and watch the girls! If you don't watch the girls, you don't get paid! It's win/win!
Why am I doing this enginerding thing again? I think I found my dreamjob at age 14....

edit: Someone was whining to me, so I should clarify. I was just joking. Lifeguarding was a lot of fun, but it is a serious job, people put their lives in your hands. It is something to be taken seriously.

/edit

I spent my summer working for a school supply store called School Stuff. I learned a lot about business and marketing, and made a lot of new friends. Plus, I got to meet a lot of cute little kids! Always fun.

Before this, I've worked at an insurance office (for help with filing papers), a major newspaper (as weekend help... putting the inserts and ads into Sunday papers), a pizza place (isn't that a mandatory part of high school?), and a local grocery store chain (helping people bag and carry out their groceries).

As far as I'm concerned, I really lucked out with my 'college job' - the people are great, the place is wonderful, and not only do I get off for FIRST competitions, my boss comes with me!

This summer, I worked in the auditorium at my school. We rent it out to people and work thier shows. Every weekend was a dance recital that would last all day with not much to do for us. So i took advantage of this situation and read a robot book and got paid $10/hr. It is a nice job. This allowed for a lot of time to spend with the team and was able to do all of the summer activities.

No job for me this summer unless you count going over to friend's houses and fixing their computers/software for the price of pizza

I took summer school instead so I could fit in an extra AP Science course.
