3ds max 6

3ds Max 6 has been announced. I wonder if they'll include it in the kit this year? Has anyone heard anything either way?

I suspect that they will. I don't really see why not. 3DS MAX 6 is supposed to be far more better than 3ds Max 5.

/I can't wait until we hear about this....I just hope they still use the same file format

3ds Max 6 is the the new "evolved" version of 5 as discreet would say. They added even more features than they normally do when they come out with a new version. Luckily, all versions of 3ds max use the same "*.max" format. The only thing is if you use old version files on six then you have to resave the data so that it may update to version 6 "*.max" format. In other words you can older and/or newer files even sweeter. I am happy about the fact that discreet ships 6 with not only reactor, but also with mental ray.

yeah- its nice to see that Mental Ray has gotten its way into XSI then Maya and now replaced 3ds's questionable and SLOW GI/Caustics....
Its nice to see that modelling has improved upon previous versions- isoline display...
Command Line Rendering was nice to have been included- since it is a basic provision of high-end graphics....
even highend-3d included discreet's gaming solution with the true highend programs- except its missing houdini master....
o well- discreet is improving upon its game creation software. it would be fun to play around with when it gets shipped.
Still no Linux

It never fails, We just upgraded all our other versions to be the same version 5, Now well get a new version so we'll have the same issues we had before. We'll probably deal with it for a year then upgrade them all again.

Quick note on upgrading: If you are interested, look for an Educational Reseller. The price is a fraction of the normal upgrade cost. We always solicite donations specificly for the Animation team (Ie Computers and Software)

Ha

3dsmax 6 isn't worth it I know I wouldn't pay to upgrade !

If they actually included hair or something that would be impressive.
And whats up with the hype about releasing DEEP paint engine then say "it didn't work out!"
This should be v 5.5!!!
lets take a look at what they give you:

Metaballs:
This should have been included many versions ago and there are several plugins for this since v 2!

Mental ray renderer:
Wow they included a plugin (to export the mental ray libs)

Rag Doll dynamics:
I guess this is pretty good

Vertex paint:
woowwww theres not much use to this one expect maybe game dev

HDRI support:
Theres a free importer for this

Render to texture:
This is nice but not really worth it

Most of the other new features are really small ! theres nothing so great about v.6

Don't believe me? go to cgtalk.com and read what the proffesionals say
(it's in the 3dsmax forum)

If you don't like (or want) 3ds max 6, use Blender ( http://www.blender.org i think is the address).

Thats not what I mean... 3dstudio is my fav software I love from the bottom of my tiny heart!!

What I mean is that this update is disappointing and doesn't have enough new features! I don't want a different package I want a better package for the amount of money I pay to upgrade!

3dsmax is great I've tried Maya and XSI (after 2yrs of 3d max tho ) and didn't like them

It's probably still in the works. E-mail them your ideas, and maybe it might happen.

Yep- 3ds has always been lacking in features- though it does make up for it is a REALLY easy to use UI.
If you need lots of features- go to programs like XSI, Maya, Houdini.
I know I use Maya mainly because it has loads of features- Great renderer- and it is for Linux.
3DS Max was built for Game Developers- has always will always.

MAX 6

You all are forgetting that MAX is GIVEN to each school. and if you have been in it a while, then you have multiple seats. So watch the comments before they decide that this ungratefull bunch of snot nose kids don't deserve it. (Thats not what I'm calling you all, it's what Autodesk MIGHT think of you, just before they decide to NIX the competition and stop giving out free software!)

Come on man! We're not the only ones that use this software and just because autodesk gives it to us doesn't make it a good update.

Actually this would make an awesome UPDATE not a new release, I wouldn't pay a grand to upgrade from 5->6
I am very grate ful for them giving it to us and I believe it's an awesome software but this doesn't hide the fact that they should've added more features before releasing it as 6. And i mean major features like Fur , hair or something else like that.

To The Artist formerly know as... Well I don know that so I guess $_@_1_i_|< will have to do.

I never said that because they are giving it to us, it must be awesome. Please read before you accuse me of somthing. All I'm saying is don't dis Autodesk just because you feel like it. Think about what you are saying first. If you read your first post, it soinded like you thought Max was the worst software written. Then your next post you say you love it. Make up your mind.

FYI: Good FUR and Hair features weren't available in the big software untill fairly recently. There have been versions that existed, but nothing that was that great. Monsters INC was the first major production that had really realistic Fur and that was alot of proprietary progaramming by Pixar. I have a friend who works for Blue Sky Productions- they did Animations on movies like Alien 3: Reserection. I know that they have former Rocket Scientists and/or Neuclear Physists on their programming team and they right code for stuff like that that the public never sees.

So why should somthing like MAX hav it included. I nkow you think this software is expensive, but try buying a Fully equiped version of Maya. The only reason there is a version of MAYA that costs about the same as 3D Max is they wanted to expand their market. But thats not what the big guys are using.

I've been in this industry for 10years (Professionally) things take time to develop and trickle down to the lower end software. I've seen this and experienced this first hand. Things that used to take lots of skill and experience and a week of development time 5-10 yrs ago- Can now be accomplished with a push of a button. Be patient.

THIS FORUM IS BUILT AROUND FIRST and the VISUALIZATION COMPETITION. If this is the application you are applying the software in, then you should have no problem upgrading your software from an Educational reseller. In this case we upgraded last year for $150 each. If you read my first post, you would see that recomendation a while ago.

I am primarily a LIGHTWAVE3D user. It is in the same price range as MAX. Both of these ARE used in a professional environment and are used on TV shows, Movies and anything else you want. There are several reasons it is used, one is that they are good packages, another is that they are relativly cheap. its more cost effective and productive to have 10 seats of MAX or LW3D than it would be to have 10 seats of the FULL version of MAYA. But MAYA would be out of business if Cost was the only factor. There is a difference in what you get so it costs more.

There are features much simpler than FUR that I saw take 2-3 releases of software to come to furition. They existed for years in Softimage and MAYA and I turned blue holding my breath waiting for them to come out and finally they did. So keep waiting and let them know what you want. If they get enough requests, they will put prioriety on it.
