Re: Team's Shop

You might want to add options of "no shop" or "less than 500 sq. ft." We've got a small mill, and a horizontal bandsaw. That's it. I'm sure there are teams on par with mine, and even less fortunate.

Sounds like an impressive new shop. We just used the high school's auto shop, which had lots of space and equipment, but we'd have to pack all our stuff away, because it wasn't ours all the time. For example, we had to build our field at the Visteon office in Troy, because we couldn't take up the floor of the shop for 6 weeks; it was big enough, but we'd have had to tear it down every time we finished with it. As far as tools and other equipment, though, we had a good selection of hand tools, and a few big machines, like a manual mill, lathe, drill press, band saw, and welding equipment. Climate controls, though... hah. The room had a big hole in the wall, at one point, which we had to patch ourselves. Below about 30 degrees, the heater couldn't keep up with the partially fixed hole in the wall, and the shop got really cold. We'd have to wear coats and such when it got really cold. Not fun...

Re: Team's Shop

Hmm I think that we defintely have the best shop out of all of you. It is Rob Bayer's house, only he graduated and doesn't, as of yet, realize that we are going to use his house as our shop . . .

Re: Team's Shop

My team has a small storage closet in the back of the school with all are tools and a work bench or two, a class room at the front of our school were the robots are stored, and one computer lab that we can use for research and some other stuff. Are tools consist of about 5 old drill presses, 2 band saws, 1 compound miter saw, a grinder, a belt/disk sander, and a scroll saw. We also have a couple power drills a die grinder and a bunch of hand tools. But most of the time are team members and mentors bring their own tools because we like them better.

Re: Team's Shop

Our sponsor APEX is where we build our robot. They have very nice facilities and we are thankful. WE have everythign to our disposal, welding, cutting and anthing you can think of is done on premises which is nice. They have the lunch room where we set up camp with our laptops and drawing board. They have the big printers to let us print are autocad on.

Its something i take for granted sometimes, but if it wasnt for them we wouldnt have a robotics team

Re: Team's Shop

my team is currently looking for a shop ... my school doesnt have a place to build in so we are asking companies to donate space ... we have some prospects which is an awesome thing .. if we dont find anyone willin to give us the space, we will be building out of one the team members garages , which i am very thankful for even if it is freezing cold in the build season!! but obviously, any shop is better than no shop ... and plus , he said his house has a lot of tools and machinery we can use ... yay!

Re: Team's Shop

My team uses a middle-school woodshop. The worst part is having to clean up everything and move it to a seperate room.

Re: Team's Shop

we just got a basement room in our school for this year, although next year is up in the air. We will have a table-top drill press, some grinders, and some saws. Down in the theater shop they have a bandsaw, a large, huge, gigantic table saw, some drill presses, other saws, and some welding equipment.

I'd say it might be, oh, 40x40 feet. Big concrete pillar in the middle though, and a real nice ledge, about desk-height, on one wall that is concrete. Will be usefull. I know I am pleased, and I'm working on a designe that require minamal machining.

Re: Team's Shop

We just got our sponsorship with Flexicell within the last month, and the'yre donating their space and tools to us (among other things )
They're currently in a building with 24k sq ft. of floor space...BUT, luck lucky us,
they're moving into a brand new building within 5 minutes of my house with over 64k sq ft. of floor space. They have just about any kind of tool you can imagine. And the'yre letting us take parts from their stock inventory! That means we dont have to wait for shipping on metal/bearings/etc. Its all at out disposal. And, we get the infamous flexicell suction cups at our disposal
I know what it's like having little resources though. Our last two years were fairly harsh. Our first we built out of a 2 car garage that was half way full of clutter, and the only tools we had were a tablesaw, drilpress, and some workbenches.
This past year was a little better, we had more tools, and a full basement, and a good deal of space to practice in.
This year we're really happy. We think we'll have enough space to mark out the entire field! Though, I'm still not entirely sure how much space we can use. But, we shouldn't have many problems this year.
