Yay for finally having a good GTK+2 media player, even if it's still in like, alpha stage now .

I couldn't get the latest CVS build working.. The EQ was all messed up. But hey, XMMS will be going GTK2 on version 2.

www.winamp.com

Wow, I feel silly now. If you go there the first thing you'll notice is a huge thing for Winamp 5! LOL. I guess the releases we've seen so far were hush hush beta tests.

If you go to just http://winamp.com however, you still see the winamp 3 stuff (or at least you did a little while ago) the 'www' makes a difference in this case.

Re: Winamp5 Beta

Seems Slashdot gave a favorable review of it.

Personally I've been sticking to Winamp 2 because it's fast, lite, and small. Crazy skins with alpha-shading are cool and all that, but annoying - all I want is something small to play my MP3s in the background (or rather, at the top of my screen) that doesn't take up 50% of my computer's resources. The 5-second bootup period of Winamp 3 also turned me off. Maybe I'll try this Winamp 5 now...

Re: Winamp5 Beta

Great job, winamp people. The features of 2+3 and the lack of bugs is very nicely done. Pro version is great.

However, my system can run iTunes for Windows just fine and I will have to stick with that. Its interface and iTunes music store is just unparalleled.

Absolutely right on, Dan! I'm using 2.81 and it does just what I need.

Represent.

Re: Winamp5 Beta

Did anyone else ever use Winplay3? Made by Fraunhofer IIS.. same guys that developed MP3s in 1989. They have interesting papers (if you're interested in audio) on their site...which I can't seem to find right now. Hehe, and people thought Napster created MP3s.

MP3s were created in 1989? You sure it wasn't just some early form of the codec or something? Seems to me like if MP3 was around then, those old '89 DOS games (Commander Keen, anyone?) would be using more than synthesized MIDIs. I honestly don't know anything about the history of the format, but '89 seems too early for me.

Re: Winamp5 Beta

[Not to stray off topic, but then what was the topic of this thread]

Here is a history of the MP3 http://http://www.mp3-mac.com/Pages/History_of_MP3.html

It states that Fraunhofer recieved his patent for the MP3 in 1989.

Re: Winamp5 Beta

http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/index.html is their site. They seem to do a lot of wave-based things. Interesting company. Lots of DSP and medical tech.

Also, for everyone talking about opensource.. you're being mildly hypocritical (as am I ) because MP3 is a closed standard. A better solution is Ogg Vorbis. It's licensed under the LGPL and the compression is about the same as MP3. I have heard multiple stories from many audiophiles whether the quality-to-size ratio was better than MP3. All the music I rip now is in Ogg Vorbis. Check out www.xiph.org

Also part of xiph is Ogg Theora, which is, I believe, a video codec derived from On2's VP3 codec. Unlike VP3, Theora is distributed under the LGPL.

Anyways, sorry for getting off-topic. But I like this kind of stuff

(ooh ooh, FLAC rules!)

Back then it took tons of processing power to make them, plus size was still a problem. Only in the pentium age did they become feasable to use, and now with cd roms and high speed internet they are easy to transfer. Anyone remember their 486's with VGA monitors, 5.5 and 3.25 floppy drives?
