The Story of Monster Garage

Did anyone catch that episode on Discovery tonight? I watched it and thought it was great. There were a few good quotes I picked up while wathcing.

"You can know everything about everything, but if you don't pick up your dam hands up every once in a while, your knowledge is useless." - Jesse James

"Never underestimate the power of a wheelie." - Jesse James

"That was like a million dollar shot we got for eight bucks." - Producer

I saw it too and thought it was pretty cool. I was especially interested to find out how they made that hearse explosion. Which turned out to be that they threw a can of propane into the car crusher! I like to see the way Jeese will demolish the failed projects (Sandrail destroyed by Minigun!).

I still don't know about the hearse destruction. That seemed like a really big explosion for just a can of propane. Then again, I have never exploded propane before.

And for the Sandrail destruction, can you imagine how much that cost!?!?! How many rounds do you think he fired?

Re: The Story of Monster Garage

They also had a more recent episode where they destroyed a Delorean hover craft with a navy amphibious vehicle. They kept running it over 'till it was nothing but pieces. Jesse then autographed the pieces and handed them to the men from the navy as souveniors. I also heard Jesse keeps some pieces of the failed projects as momentos.

That was aweful. What butchers! I think DJ and I had a little chat about this episode in Tigerbolt after I saw it. Transforming cars into something cool is perfectly accepatble. But transforming cool cars in to scrap is absurd!

Remember, the only reason they destroyed it was becasue it did not work like a hovercraft, With Monster Garage, if the projects don't work then they destroy them i.e. Hurse, Sandrail, Delorean.

Yes but there were still plenty of good parts Delorean restorers would have paid a lot of cash for. Now there is nothing.

Actually, given the shape it was in at the end of the build process, I doubt any rational Delorean restorer would have paid more than scrap value for it.

Now, if you could interest a "Jesse James Memorabilia Collector," then you might get a completely different answer!!! (personally, I would shell out some shekels for the 90-mph lawn-mowing Mustang!)

Re: The Story of Monster Garage

I fully understand the concept of the show and that they will canabalize highly desirable cars for ratings but I just feel it's wrong to destroy a rare and collectible car. They actually destroyed two Deloreans to make the hovercraft. Jesse didn't like the way they cut up the first one and had them get a second one. The second one had already been partially stripped but it could have been saved and restored. Even if the hovercraft had worked two Deloreans were butchered to the point they weren't worth anything. Of a car that had low production two more are now history. They would have been better off using something similar like a Camaro that had thousands produced then destroying one or two wouldn't mean anything. But then again I guess lower ratings would then mean something.
As a side note I will say I restored and own a 68 Mustang and seeing desirable cars destroyed can leave a sick feeling in your gut. But I wouldn't feel as bad watching a 68 Mustang get destroyed as I would a 68 Shelby!! I just hope the producers don't read this, I wouldn't want to give them ideas!

Does anyone know if they auction off these cars for charities? My guess without looking into is that they just keep them in a garage or "hall of fame" somewhere.

They keep them all in a garage and parkign lot behind Jesse's shop except for the ones they destroyed. However, I believe they did auction off the fire truck limo in Washington DC for charity. I'm not sure on that but that's what I remember one of the monster garage road show staff telling me when they were in LA at the Peterson Automotive museum showing off the monster garage cars.

Re: The Story of Monster Garage

I have heard nothing about selling any of the vehicles but I do know that some of them go on tour around the country. If you go to discovery.com you can find which ones are on tour and where. They had pictures of them at Bike Week in Daytona and the Chicago Auto Show. I have never been to the auto show but I have been to McCormick Place where they hold it. It's the largest exposition hall in the whole north american continent. They could have brought all the cars there and still have enough room for all the other exhibitors!

Re: The Story of Monster Garage

I remember seeing one where they modified a SUV for operation by someone in a wheelchair, and at the end of the episode they gave it to a guy in a wheelchair.

I've also seen a special where they were in a showroom with a bunch of the older cars. I remember it being like a Used Car commercial on TV, saying they were for sale or something, but that may have just been a joke.
