I'm the animation "coach" from Team 88 TJ². I say "coach" because i'm a sophmore in college, and not really official, but i'm the most knowlagable person on the team, so I do what I can to help. I love coaching (and animation), but I can't really devote enough time (long distance commute) to be effective over the long term. I also feel frustrated because i've learned most of what i know on my own, but i would love to meet someone who could teach me and the team more than i can about both modeling and the art and design of an animation. We had an excellent coach for 2 years, but he had to leave, and I stepped in. Well, enough with the backstory. :-)
My question is, where do most teams find animation coaches? Our sponser is J&J, and we have asked around for people to help, but there either doesn't seem to be any interest or anyone knowlegable in 3DS Max. Are some teams lucky enough to find people who work in animation for a living, and bring them in? Or do they find people like our previous coach that are unrelated engineers, but happen to be handy with computers and learn the software? Are we not trying hard enough, or are we just looking in the wrong places? Any information or advice in finding a permanant coach would be appreciated. |

Re: Finding an Animation Team Leader
we unfortunatly don't have anyone like that, in fact no one on the team knows how to use 3dsmax. somehow i became the team leader.
I'm starting the second tutorial from the book. ... ... ... fun. us, like you, are learning it all on our own. |

Re: Finding an Animation Team Leader
Also look at local colleges or community colleges. They might have some one that teaches it.

Re: Finding an Animation Team Leader
I find it kind of interesting. We've never had a professional come in and help up. I learned my way around 3ds Max though pure dedication and the want to learn. I think the great majority of us are self taught or learned from peers who were self taught. My team isn't really in a location like CA where animators and the Computer Animation major is more common.
I will say that after joining www.3dbuzz.com and watching thier video tutorials, I've relearned what took months to figure out in only a few hrs. I know that if new/self taught 3DS Maxers go through 3dbuzz's basic Max lesson they'll have quite a step up to be more closer to be able to produce good quality work. My 3 cents... |

Re: Finding an Animation Team Leader
I was self-taught, and honestly I think that's the best way to go about things until you have the ability to take some college courses on them. I even disapprove of tutorials in part, because the best way to learn 3DSMAX is just attempt to do something, you'll find a lot more than you would in a tutorial because you'll stumble into so many new things.

Re: Finding an Animation Team Leader
I would suggest contacting any video production, post-production, or multimedia companies in your area.
That would be where any knowledgable graphics animation person in the area would be. Next I might see if there is any animation/multimedia user groups or Colleges with Computer graphic courses. In michigan, the SEMAFX organization (www.semafx.net) is a network of professional digital artists that are helping to mentor teams. The group is co-sponsoring three 3D workshops. Primarily because we know how difficult it has been finding Animation mentors. |

Re: Finding an Animation Team Leader
Start digging back into the high school, outside of the technology departments. There may be some art or computer students that would have already-trained parents that want to mentor. Or, maybe some of the teachers have animation experience...you never know!
Furthermore, check with your past coach. (S)He may have friends that would want to mentor...since like usually pairs with like. Good luck! |

Re: Finding an Animation Team Leader
This is why animation is so hard. Everyone wants to build robots, and there is plenty of documentation to help a rookie team.. Want to build an animation that can compete.... it will take at least 2 years of learning and probably more like 3-4. Dedication is all the help that I can give you, but try going to 3dcafe.com or 3dtotal.com they have great tutorials that can get the ball rolling. Even if you don't put forth an awesome animation, you can only improve, so keep up the hard work, it will pay off.

Re: Finding an Animation Team Leader
Yep, right now most of our team is self taught and peer-taught from people who have been self taught. I'm hoping next year or over the summer we can find a really knowledgeable mentor so that I can learn a lot over the next two years I have left with FIRST.

Re: Finding an Animation Team Leader
yeah.. ive looked for a bit and i couldnt find anyone, although i do have one lead on a kid who graduated a couple years ago who did a 3 year independent study on 3dsm. To say the least, my team has no idea how to do this stuff. This is the first year we're attempting it, and im the only one so far trying to do anything, and i just got the software yesterday (never even looked at it b4 then lol) so, it should be fun

Re: Finding an Animation Team Leader
I am also self-taught. I just took little steps. Started out with figuring out the basics (basic animation, cameras, lights, etc), and as I thought of things that I wanted to be able to do, I learned how to do them (particle systems, advanced rendering, environmental effects, etc). 3dbuzz is a great website as mentioned before, 3dluvr.com is also a good resource. When I was trying to learn to do something new, I usually tryed to figure it out on my own first, and then I would use a tutorial or reference 3ds Max's Help file to help steer me in the right direction.

Re: Finding an Animation Team Leader
My interest in 3d graphix began in the summer after eighth grade. I slowly educated myself using maxon's c4d 7.1. I was amazed by what could be done. To my surprise, the pinnacle of my experience in c4d was this which i made almost a day or two after i began.
From there, i just read tutorials and books whenever i have time. |
