Max6 + Mental Ray issues

I've been trying to get max6 to open with mental ray but it always gets to the little screen where it sayss "loading plug-ins" and freezes up. If I remove the one mental ray plug-in file, max opens but i obviously lose the mental ray capabilities. Anyone know if this is just a system requirements problem (512 mb ram, pentium3 700-something processor). I've worked without it so far but now that the season is fast approaching, it might be nice to have such a nice feature.....
