Re: Encrypted Rules are now available

Thanks for pointing this out. Now that I think of it, I downloaded the game manual off of the USFIRST.org website last year after kickoff with no problem. Were the delays that bad that FIRST felt the need to do this? I never ran into the problem myself...

Try deleting all the temporary Internet files. Your browser is probably going to local disk for web pages it has loaded recently and not bothering to go to the actual site. There are settings in most browsers to specify how often to go looking for web page updates, e.g., look every time or look once a day. My guess is yours is not set to check for page updates very often.

And in the same spot look under Settings to see how often your browser is set to refresh it's stack of saved web page files.

Re: Encrypted Rules are now available

I have tried downloading the manual when it is first released in the past and there's little hope sometimes of ever getting the connection to work and then getting a decent download rate. I don't know if all this is absolutely necessary, but it can't hurt. And if for some reason someone out there can't manage to download them because they've waited till the last minute and the servers are constantly busy - IM me and I'll hook you up.

Breaking the code is a HUGE no-no. Beyond the fact that it's virtually impossible (you'd need some pretty powerful computers to break it before Saturday morning), it completely violates the spirit of Gracious Professionalism.

Well here is what I do know about those documents

The Introduction has 2 pages. The arena has 5 pages to it. The game has 4 pages to it. The robot has 21 pages. The tournament has 4 pages. And the awards has 27 pages to it.

I think FIRST might've been better off setting up mirrors for the document, or even asking some FIRST teams or FIRST-ers to mirror the sites. What team wouldn't be more than willing to spare some bandwith? I'm not too sure if all of this trouble and the fuss people are making out of it was worth it...

Eric, any further talk about this and I'll sign off and notify you know who about you performing illegal actions. The documents will not be available in readable form until kickoff do I make myself clear on that.

P.S. at setup tommorrow I want to speak with you in private.

I just wanted to point out that noone is going to break the code unless they are REALLY good guessers. The possible combinations would require years to test with even the best programs.

I earlier this week wrote a program to test as many combinations as possible and compare them to the hash output on the test d/l.

if you assume that they only use letters and numbers, that is 62 characters(case sensitive). You would also assume the password is less than 20 characters long, as the test one i beleive was a whopping 16 or so.

so that equals 62^20 combinatiosn: roughly 7x10^35 combinations. Now, my computer is easily one of the best public access machines in the project(brand new A64 w/a gig a ram!) and i was able to process roughly 45,000 entries per second.

That equals 496380450946359732065174.37892241 years. Thats right, it would take 1 computer longer than the lifespan of the universe to break the code... hense why the government trusts it.

On a further note, the full gov standard uses a larger character set, and 128 code length. it would take roughly 4x10^72 years to break it in that case.

So you see, unless they use some blatently obvoius and guessable password, this is not going to be broken by the kickoff. I dont think CD has to worry about any of the other people breaking the code by the kickoff.
