King of the Pole/Platform
Has anyone thought of building a robot that is able to be King of the Pole or King of the Platform?
Like, if you build a hanging robot, are you making it so you can block other people from hanging from the bar. OR instead of making a robot that is able to hang, then making it able to climb up on to the platform and block other teams from hanging. OR if you are not able to climb the steps, are you able to block other teams from climbing the steps. These are just ideas that came up one meeting, and I was curious if any team was doing. I am not asking if it is worthwhile to do (my team decided against this for a variety of reasons) or how to do it, like I said, I am just curious if some teams are doing it. |

Re: King of the Pole/Platform
Me and another Mentor on my team thought of playing King of the Pole, similiar to many teams playing King of the Hill last year. Basically it involved attaching to the 10' pole, and having say 2 pieces of extrusion on the front and back extend past the vertical bars. Reasoning? If a team happens to try to ram/knock into you while you're hanging, you'll simply bounce back and forth on the vertical bars (legal since you're not using them for support).

Maybe a team will do all the above. Think about being attached to the bar and still be able to drive around to prevent anybody else to get on the platform and be able to knock out the 2x ball at the last second before pulling yourself up. Did I say make sure your attached first to the bar before doing the other things. |

i really would like to see a robot doing that (hanging on the bar and then keep other robotics off the platform) ... that robot which would do that would be really robust and very nice designed. |

This is not to hard of a robot to make. Step one make a small arm that goes up and deploys a cable around the bar Step two bring in the arm and run around on top two platform still connected to the bar by a cable. Step three use the arm that brought the cable up to the pole to knock off the 2x ball at the last sec. Step three turn on the winch and fly by anybody that might be in your way. ( it is hard to stop something that is going up.) The easy of them all is having a strong robus robot to push other robots. |

Re: King of the Pole/Platform
Why not just be simple. Have it so that with the flip of a switch, side panels drop off the side of your robot and top at at abput a 45-degree angle.

so having a ramp is not going to stop anybody from getting to the bar. you have to keep the robot far away from the pole or keep them busy by pushing them around |

Re: King of the Pole/Platform
I think it'd be easy to keep them from hanging - I don't know about the platform thing. You don't need to keep them from the platform though - there's no merit in getting up there. Simply pull yourself up and attach materials to the bar which prevent others from latching on. If you can't come up with ways to block others' hanging mechanisms, you're just not being creative!

Re: King of the Pole/Platform
i just think that it will take a lot of time to get up there and hang... atleast 30 to 35 secs... i might be wrong but thats my opinion....

Re: King of the Pole/Platform
[quote]do you realize that how much torque would you need to hang from a 10 ft. high bar when your robot weight is about 130 lbs. and then if that robot which is hanging from that bar is trying to keep the other bots off hanging... yes that robot has to be really good structured and nicely designed! thats my opinion. if somebody else have any other way to explain a simple way to hang from that 10 ft. high bar and then keep the other bots off the platform ... i will be really interested to read the post
I am only trying to help. I do realize how much torque. We hung back in 2000. Quote:

Re: King of the Pole/Platform
Last year, the King of the hill could keep bins from getting past while holding of other robots. He could control all aspects of the game. This year, the pole does not effect the balls at all. You guys can have fun playing King of the Pole; that's one less robot we'll have to worry about while we're gathering balls.

Re: King of the Pole/Platform
wouldn't the easiest way to stop other teams from grabbing the bar simply be to change the geometry of the bar? for example, you could lay a wide piece of lexan flat against the top of the horizontal bar - a robot's grappling hook that was expecting a round bar would not be able to hook on.

Re: King of the Pole/Platform
With so many different aspects of the game, there will be many different kinds of robots. You are bound to see any kind of robot design u can dream of. There will also be a few that break the mold and have out of this world designs and be able to do it all.
