Re: kil-a-byte jetpack

Very sexy. I prefer to make rectangles, round them out, and call it a day. Still haven't even figured out how to make reflective surfaces. What modeling software did you use for this one?

Re: kil-a-byte jetpack

Go to materials, change it to a Raytrace materail (Click the button that says standard and change it to raytrace) then go to the maps rollout, click on reflection, pick falloff. I find the best results come from making it a Fresnel falloff instead of the perpendicular and unchecking the material IOR override and changing in manually.

Jetpack looks great, the flames look good as well.

Re: kil-a-byte jetpack

yup, 3ds max and raytrace materials. pretty much the basic MetalChrome material that comes with 3ds max, but modified a bit for this model. Flames were done in chaos pheonix, the best fire plugin in my opinion. expect more, we've got alot to come.

Re: kil-a-byte jetpack

$350 for a fire plugin!!! Holy crud! Am I just at a site that sells freeware at extraordinary prices or is that insane?

Re: kil-a-byte jetpack

Some of the more useful plugins can cost as much as the program itself.

Re: kil-a-byte jetpack

However, when you think about it, single people aren't really supposed to be using plugins like that. There are many freelance animators and stuff but plugins they have they usually get while they are working with a company. If freeware plugins did the job, and don't get me wrong a lot of them are great, then we wouldn't be paying for plugins like that.

Re: kil-a-byte jetpack

umm not really...
plugins are cheap if you get the educational license for them.
FOr example, Cebas Final render is like $800 for the commercial purposes.. but its only $100 for educational use.
Most plugins are like that.

Re: kil-a-byte jetpack

I think you did an excellent job on the jetpack. Although there is one thing I would have done differently. I wouldn't have put the background the same color as the jetpack itself. When I first looked at it I couldn't really tell what it was. It looked pretty much like a chair and some blue fire. Other than that, I'd say you are an awesome animator!

Re: kil-a-byte jetpack

Depending on the IOR of his material, it will always look like what's around it.
