every point of our robot that is susceptible to damage is built with numerous break-away joints. the joints will slip or stretch or whatever, but the mechanism itself will be unharmed.

Re: How roboust is your teams robot going to be?

Despite the fact that many teams rejected (at least in the forums ) the idea of a hopper for catching the balls when they first fall, our team decided to give it a try. I don't know all the details (I'm a programmer not a hopper designer) but if we get hit while our hopper is out, it could snap. It would (supposedly) have to be a really hard collision, though.

Hahahahahaha!!

After 1.5 years of my driving - altough i'm not going to drive this year - my engineers have always wanted a robust robot - but now it's required for my type of driving! hahahahaha!

Na, but ours will be very robust.

Re: How roboust is your teams robot going to be?

Well our teams moto is build it 100 times as strong as it needs to be then drill holes in it because it's too heavy. Last year nothing that our team built broke. Except those stupid drill transmitions. If any of you saw our team in the pits I was probably in the back replacing a drill transmition. This year we are not using the supplied transmitions so nothing on our robot will break.

Re: How roboust is your teams robot going to be?

The chassis itself will never break. However we may have some problems with our other mechanisms, but its too early in the build to really determine.

Yeah, I hear that with drill motors, last year we had our robot on its back with about 15 people trying to make it work in time for our match.

Re: How roboust is your teams robot going to be?

Ok, try this:
Think a tank with wheels. But a lightweight tank. That'll give you an idea of our bot.
We have about 75% of our drive done, and the chassis plus a few more drive components is just shy of 25 lbs. And it can take some major load.
Me (co-captain) and the captian both gave it our good old stress test, we sat on it, tried standing on it, gave it a few whacks, etc. Our weight combined is near 400 lbs. Our chassis didn't even flex.
I'm quite pleased with the way things are turning out with our drive/chassis this year. It actually looks like a slick bot. Well, slicker than anything we've done before.
Anyway, expect our bot to be taking major bashes without any effect this year. Oh, and we shouldn't get flipped like we did once last year (*see avatar).

Re: How roboust is your teams robot going to be?

Well at this point, out frame isn't too robust. It is 1" 8020, held toghther with those weird fasterners, whose name i don't remember. Anyway, i think we are going to double those up, gusset the hell out of everything and maybie add corner plates in places. If that still doean't work, then we break out the TIG welder.

wouldn it also tip over with the weight of those balls going at it? that would be cool to watch...
