I believe they are typically sewn. You'd need a really really industrial strength sewing machine to do it, though! That stuff is tough!

Most of the ones I've seen have been sewn also. Depending on what you're doing with the belt an industrial contact cement may also work.

the endless belts are usually welded together, well thats what the conveyor belt ppl tell me, but the ones that come in stripes usually have a lot of small hooks and the end and you stick a rod through them to hold it together (just like door hinges in your house)
