Who's Drilled the Most Lightening Holes?

Heh, let's see who's got the most in ONE COMPONENT, please.

I was a member of our team's "Hail Mary" device (extendable arm to reach the endzone). We had so many holes to drill it wasn't funny.

We had 12 peices in our part. Counting each side, that's 24 sides to drill in.

We had 3 holes for attaching per peice.

We had 83 holes on each side of each peice.

24 * 83 + (3 * 24) = 2064 holes. All drilled and deburred.

Oh, and we had to make two sets of them, too. Wheee!

And FYI, overall weight loss on the peice was 1lb. Divide that by the number of holes, and we get....

a whopping total of 4.844 x e-4 lbs lost per hole. Can anyone share in our misery?

We took 23 pounds off of our side panels in week 4.
We also redesigned one of our systems from the ground up in week 5 & 6!!!

But. the last 4 pounds to come off were the hardest.t

As the old saying goes, "The trick is to not take the weight off, but to keep it off."

I'm afraid when we get to our first regional our robot will have eaten everything else in our crate and gained 15 lbs. LOL

lol

I was the guy on our team to come up with the design for our extendo arm. I found myself drilling and milling!!! The arm its self extends 12 feet. The arm weighs less than 2 pounds. The whole thing weighs 4 pounds.

too many holes to count!!

Last year we drilled in excess of 2,600 holes. Erik counted them all, but he graduated and I don't remember the excat number...
This year we incorperated lighting holes in our design from the get go, and drilled them as we went.

Also, I got a reporter from a local paper to use "swiss cheesing" as the team for what we did to our scoop.

There is another thread with this topic

we cut a lot of holes into our belt. we took out 9 lbs just on the belt. I am only guessing at least 2500 holes in the belts

to bad we are leaving this part of the robot home
