Are you actively shifting the gears, or are you using a single fixed gear?

Generally, the above problem is due to the transmission popping out of gear.

If you're shifting, check your shifter to be sure it can generate (and hold) enough force to keep the transmission in gear.

If you're not shifting, you'll need to add something to the drill motor to keep the shifter in place, or else it will pop out of gear. You can make a spacer-collar to put around the outside of the motor, you can make a spacer ring to put in the transmission itself, or you can maybe think of a creative way to tie-wrap it in place.

Re: Transmission Problems

Make sure that the torque setting (the numbered thingy at the end) is on drill and not some number. The drill setting looks like a little drill bit.

Re: Transmission Problems

Also, make shure that the drill tranny is not coming apart. The tranny uses a twist-lock system to hold the 2 halves together. I saw many teams last year that broke the tabs in this twist-lock system because the drill tranny mounts in the kit don't give the best support.

How can we change the transmission in order to keep the shifter in place? I believe our robot is exactly that. When we place the robot on the floor, the wheels won't spin unless we start it off slowly and even then it will still make clicking sounds.

Thanks

That sounds very much like the torque setting referred to above. If the problem was the shifter popping out of gear then I don't think your bot would move at all.

The large black cover over the front of the transmission has numbers on it which represent the level of torque you will get before "slipping". I would guess that is the clicking sound you are hearing. If you turn that cover past its highest setting you will get to an small graphic that looks like a drill bit. That is where you want it set.

Hope this helps ... I wish I could take a picture and post it - a picture is worth at least 1000 words in this case ...

Re: Transmission Problems

You can use zip ties to keep the shifter in place. Make sure you get the shifter push all the way in the direction you want and secure a zip tie on the back of the shifter. Tight but not overtightened. That how are team solves this problem. As for if the transmission is coming apart, get better motor mounts. We got new motor mounts, non-kit, post season after having trouble later with the motor and transmission becoming un-meshed. Disadvantage is that it would cost you weight. We didn't have real motor mount problems til post-season.

Re: Transmission Problems

There is a very close thread to this one with a good summary answer of where to find help.
