Really, it's hard to use at first, but once you get the hang of it, you can edit REALLY fast, and the syntax highlighting makes it easy to read.

I mean really... Notepad? What if my PHP code has an error on line 529?

How do you get to 529 quickly in notepad? I just hit :529[enter].

And yes, theres a Windows version.

So, if you ever have a few hours to spare, download it and try to learn it. In the long run, you may be glad that you did.

Or you may end up hating it a lot.

For windows, I really must recommend elvis.

I must say it's my preferred vi clone for windows. vim is a good one, too.

Re: Notepad Baby!

Well, when it comes down to it, you'll use whatever you want. The time that I save by not having to hit the tab key when I code is valuable time for me. I use studio.net more then dreamweaver, but the best part about dreamweaver is how fast you can build forms and such. A couple clicks, and I'm saved half an hour trying to remember all the options I need. Dreamweaver code doesn't get ugly till you start adding in php or asp behaviors.

The other reason to use Dreamweaver, at least for me, is using plugins. I have quite a few plugins that do anything from upload a file, resize an image, or create a shopping cart for use with pay pal. All's I'm saying is don't get so burried in thinking you need to do all of your code, and all of it by hand. Take every opertunity to use existing code and programs to make your life easier. It pays off.

Re: Notepad Baby!

My editor of choice is vi; it's small, doesn't have visual clutter, and is terrifically fast once you learn the commands. Using other editors tends to throw me off, though; the C++ class I'm taking requires the use of Visual Studio .NET, and I still haven't managed to learn that I need to use Ctrl-S instead of :w to save my work. I've been having similar problems with the MPLAB IDE, too. My opinion is that the speed advantages afforded by the use of vi offset the awkwardness I encounter on those rare occasions when I am forced to use other editors.

Re: Notepad Baby!

here is our site http://www.team825.com/

The main layout was done by one of our drafting guys in Macromedia Studio MX, but everything else that's loaded into the iframes was written by yours truly in NOTEPAD in PHP HTML and CSS. I love notepad. However, I used SQL server 2000 to do all the database junk, such as easy update calendar and news sections.

Cheers,
Joel

Re: Notepad Baby!

I use sciTE and html-kit for smaller things (html-kit for fast html mockups, sciTE for real coding). Then eclipse with a php plugin for those huge OO PHP monstrosities that are all the rage these days...

I really like using sciTE though. Code folding and high configurable mean happy wulfs. And happy wulfs are... less likely to make strange coding mistakes I guess...

But real men, they do everything in hexadecimal. Why, photoshop? Its a crutch for the WEAK.

you really don't need an iframe there - all of your content fits into the area allocated, and you could alwaus just make the area expand downwards for times when there is a large amount of text.

it's generally not a good idea to present the user with multiple scrollbars just so that they can see the content of the page.

other than that, it looks great.

Or if they're really stuck on the iframe look, they could use a CSS element with overflow on auto.
