Help TEAM 19

Hey guys and girls this is Kevin Gillick from TEAM 19 BIG RED ROBOTICS; Greenwich CT; I just wanted to post something I thought you people could help with. We were a grand fathered team from way back when FIRST started and we have been competing ever since; You may have seen us at some of last years competitions in Hartford, New York and nationals. We were the team with the black polo shirts with red pinstripes to match out Ferrari black robot. Any way this year we’ve run into a problem; due to the fact that we are a school sponsored team we have to have a faculty advisor. Because of complications I won’t mention here we were unable to get a faculty advisor and our school had no choice but to shut down our team. However with the help of a teacher who volunteered we have managed to re-start the team. We cannot build a robot to make the deadline and may lose our grandfather ship; we hope that FIRST will understand our problems. In any event we are restructuring the way our club is run so it is a more orderly and administration friendly team. I am asking for some help from all of you to get us up and running again; if you have any suggestions such as things in fundraising, administration etc. that may have worked for your team post them. We can't compete but hope to still attend nationals and cheer everyone on; please post helpful tips and I thank anyone who does.
Thank you again

Re: Help TEAM 19

going to companies and asking for sponsorships seems to be the quickest way to get money...If you dress up nicely and make a nice impression on them they may give you quite a bit of money

Re: Help TEAM 19

My Suggestions (no guarantees):
Take team members, see if any relatives own/are employed by companies, even if it's big ones, like locktight or travelers, most of those companies have grant programs/you can write formally and ask for money, it really helps that they are helping an employee's relative
Also, be sure to boast your accomplishments, and tell them that you intend to continue the tradition, people like to sponors award-winning teams, any award!!

that's about as much as i can come up with

This is great info. Also, if you need info like: Team Bylaws, Contracts, Policies, Org Charts, etc, fire me an e-mail: PC@BPRobotics.com

Are there any medium to large companies that are HQ'd in your town? Call them and ask about community sponsorship or granting programs. Some of our best sponsors have been picked up with a cold phone call.

I have lots of suggestions but no time to post them all now. I'll be back to you after shipping. We are a team that is 8 years old but went through a major restructuring 2 years ago with new teacher, new sponsors, many new students, if effect, reinventing the team. Some of the first things you need to do is get help for that teacher. The burnout factor is high for teachers. Make sure the school is behind you. Approach you administration with what you need. Get other teachers to help, even if they just come in a chaperone the team for a few hours during the build. We have English and French and math teachers who just come in so our teacher can take a break and then we ask them to write their impressions in a logbook. They are just amazed at what a bunch of students are willing to do in their "free" time.
Funding is the other big area. Write up a terrific sponsorship letter about who are you. Make sure it's proofread many times. The best way is if someone knows someone, but if not, target certain companies in your area. It's better if it is a company that can also provide you with some engineering help.
Later....

Re: Help TEAM 19

One more quick thing. Ask your school for a "Robotics" homeroom next year and have students interested be placed in it. You need to set this up soon. That way information can easily be updated every day for at least some of the students.

Re: Help TEAM 19

Hey Guys,

Becca from Team 870 last year. You, of course, remember us from last year's Hartford regional. I was the girl in the pits with the red hair and the crown. I'm sorry to hear that that happened to you. You know that we're here for you for whatever you need. You've still got a lot of our screenames from different members of the team, any of which I'm sure will be glad to help you out in any department. If you guys need ANYTHING, don't be afraid to ask me. My screename on AIM is IronSlaySabbath. For MSN, it's the same sn @hotmail.com

When it comes to fundraising, we had a dinner at a local sponsor restaurant which cut the price of nat's. dramatically for us. Talk it over with your sponsors, if you happen to have a restaurant. If not, go to a local one which has supported school functions for a while. Get an ad in the paper saying when and where it will be. See if the restaurant will do takeout. Sell raffle tickets at the tables. Talk about it on the school announcements, morning and afternoon. We sold our tickets for $25 dollars, $15 of which came directly back to students. Set up cash tins at local deli and grocery stores. It may not seem like much, but that petty cash pulled us through, food-wise, these last few days that we didn't expect to have.

Good luck with anything and don't be afraid to ask us. We love you guys and you know it, especially after Hartford.

~Love from Team 870~

Re: Help TEAM 19

Well, sadly to say, after just talking to Allen, it looks like Team 19 will not be competing this year. Apparently a few of the members might attend some regionals and nationals to offer a helping hand to any rookie teams that need it. Personally, I'm disappointed to see that they are indeed not competing, but I respect their position they have taken, and am glad to see they will be helping rookie teams and anyone for that matter who needs it. Everyone on Team 19 is very respectable, and has a lot of knowledge to share being one of the first teams involved with FIRST. I wish them the best in the future.
