Re: LOTR Sweeps the Oscars

I surfed the RT forums while the Oscars were on. Alot of anti-LOTR:ROTK posters were online booing and hissing every second, saying it was the worst Oscar show they had ever seen and that the Oscar should have gone to Lost in Translation and such.
The Oscars were rewarding the whole series and nit just ROTK and LiT is too small and abstract a film for the Oscars to feel really comfortable about rewarding. They love epics.
The Oscars isn't always about the best picture winning (Titanic best picture in 1997? Seroiusly?) it's about the film that best suits their style of film. It's more political than artistic.
I went to bed very very pleased last night. Justice was served.

I'm glad LOTR swept the house - so much work went into those movies that they deserve every award they receive.

Please. Everybody knows these awards go to whomever brings in the most money for the movie industry. If it's spread out among many movies, than you'll see a nice spread of Oscars being handed out. If it's one movie that dominates the box office, most of the Oscars will go to them. We can't help it, we're capitalists. But that's streching into the off-topic realm...

IMO though (BTW, I've only seen the first two), the LotR movies are pretty good. I reccomend everybody go out and buy the extended DVD versions of them. Helms Deep is so much better in the extended than the original. But again, that's only an OPINION.

That's not always true. The Star Wars films never won the big prize and neither did ET. And there have been Best Picture winners that didn't gross over $100 dollars (like Out of Africa). I'm trying to remember if the English Patient grossed $100 million...

I agree. There are some really cool extras on them, like the WETA workshops where thousands of swords, armour, and costumes were designed and created. A lot of people put a heck of a lot of time and effort into these movies, and I think it's one of the few movies that deserves all the credit it's getting.

But of course, we can't forget the guy who started it all God Bless Tolkien.

I'm waiting til they put out the super deluxe everything-but-the kitchen sink set of all three movies on DVD. It'll probably cost something like $300 but it'll be worth it!

I already have 2 of the dvd extended versions, and i can't stop watching them... soo goood.....

I wonder if the super-duper-deluxe pack will have more stuff than the extended versions. If it does, im screwed, cuz i can't afford 3 extended and the big deluxe thing.

I wasn't able to watch the Oscars. How many awards did they get? I think that they deserved all of them. And who else here is hoping for Jackson to make The Hobbit?

Re: LOTR Sweeps the Oscars

I've heard he's considering making The Hobbit after he does his remake of King Kong.

I've also heard somewhere that in the Extended Version of Return of the King, there will be an alternate Shire ending - how the book really ends. (Saruman, etc.) but this is just stuff I've heard.

Re: LOTR Sweeps the Oscars

First off let me say that I loved watching all three, having no prior knowledge of the books I belive that Peter Jackson did a wonderful job telling the story of the ring.

With that said...

The only reason that LOTR swept the oscars was because of the length of there production schedule. Most movies spend anywhere from a couple of weeks i.e. (Independent films, most noteably Thirteen and Elephant) to many many months of constant filming i.e. Blockbusters such as Apoclypse now, and many others.

LOTR beats any of these huge productions out by at the very least a couple of years. I belive that because all three movies culmintated with ROTK that the acadmey decided that this years oscars is when it should get it dues i.e. The Sweep.

It won all the technicaly categories becuase the people working on those aspects of the movie had years... not months to perfect everything about there section of the movie(s) weather it be Sound, Lighting, Art Direction or some other of the 11 categories it won.

On a final note, notice how nobody from any LOTR movie had an acting nomination.

Please take this post with a grain of salt, belive me I really like movies this is just my opinion on a certian few.

LOTR swept the Oscars as a reward to the whole film series as a majir achievement in filmaking history.
There were no acting niminations because no one actor stood out from the fine ensamble (though Sean Astin got serious consideration).
The technical wins were expected as films like this are usually helmed by the cream of the crop in the choosen field (though I do find it strange that it was not nominated for cinematography and Sound effects editing. It didn't deserve best adapted screenplay. That should have went to American Speldor or Mystic River. Two films that leaned more heavily on the script than LOTR:ROTK did.

Re: LOTR Sweeps the Oscars

The Oscars are not as big as they used to be...

That being said, it did deserve the awards it recieved. I agree with both music awards it won and best supporting actor (Hobbits never say die). Best picture is one I'd be a little shaky about... I personally thought Matrix Revolutions was better, but that's a whole different story. However, it won some pretty lousy awards IMO. Makeup and sound mixing? Woohoo

Since we're talking about LOTR, I was wondering if anyone else has heard ot the Lord of the Rhymes. I think that they are a bunch of idiots. They are a rap group that got their music from the Tolkein books. I really don't know how they got rap stuff from LOTR. Let me know what you think.
