Re: One thing you learnt this season
1) Professional help isn't needed
2) We can beat up any other team 3) How to take a hollow aluminum tube, jam a connector on one end and hook it to the exhaust of our pneumatics system, file down a steel rod to a point on one end, place inside aluminum tube, compress 120 psi into the tanks, open exhaust valve. Denting the light in the CAD room.. Shooting it through our pizza boxes.. Creating a lethal weapon (for real) and having our teacher laugh when he sees it shot into wood. word |

Re: One thing you learnt this season
hmmm...let's see...
1) Pizza guys aren't used to delivering pizza to schools, ESPECIALLY at 8 o'clock at night (a pizza place actually hung up on us b/c they thought it was a prank call) 1a) mental note for next year: must get a pizza place as a sponsor.... 2) make sure you have time for error 3) scissor lifts don't work well for lifting a robot 4) pneumatics work better 5) prepare for the season before it starts |

Please don't hurt me.I also learned that aluminum chips shouldn't be pulled out of you sneaker treads with bare fingers, and that cnc cutters can cut flesh too. On a serious note I learned how to use mastercam and our CNC machine which is so cool. |

This year I learnt the joys of officially mentoring. Not only do you get to exercise the iron fist of power, but you get to influence the little things in their lives sometimes too. I'm proud to know that he'll never fall asleep in class again as long as he eats his balanced breakfast of dew and snickers. Hmmmm....I wonder if you could make that into a smoothie? Oh yeah! I also learnt that if you absolutely need it here tomorrow and you pay extra double super expensive shipping and pray to the UPS gods - you will not get your order until a week later! And if you do get it on time, it's going to be steel instead of aluminum. |

I learned that generalbrando's picture, check it out, might be one of the better funny FIRST pictures I've seen this year. It was my computer background for like 3 weeks.

Re: One thing you learnt this season
Tighten the bolts that hold the 18 inch sanding disk EVERY time you use it.
MAPP gas torch w/o oxygen can be forced to work (with some modifications to the nozzle) DO NOT try to bend plexi, nylon, Acrylic, polycarb etc w/ a MAPP gas torch without oxygen. If you do try that, do it outside. TOXIC FUMES Keep your fingers away from things that move quickly and/or are designed to cut things. Depressurize/power down everthing when working on it Do not expect classmates to put in estra aftershool hours. Do not restrict team members to persons in the class. Do not eat locktite, antifreeze, or buffing compound (kevin and james) Carbide wood blades cut aluminum in a chop saw (scary) Table saws cut aluminum (and then throw it across the room) Tighten the chuck on the lathe Label every thing Put everthing away Take everthing metal and large away from Kevin when he is trying to "caress" a part into a hole. (unless you want the part destroyed and then thrown across the room in anger) Grinders like to eat Kevin's keystock You can't drill 10 mm 68 rockwell hardened steel shafts with normal HSS bits. The steel shatters. T-nuts are annoying Drop-in T-nuts are AWSOME Do not let Rasiik tighten stuff you want to get apart again Good luck this year!!! -Andy |

I learned that 12.5" polyurethane wheels are actually only 11.5" in diameter. And for some odd reason, they don't make 13.5" polyurethane wheels!! Ask Skyway?? I also learned that your kids grow a lot in 6 weeks when they're only 2.5 and 1.5 years-old respectively. But they'll still love ya'!! And most importantly, I learned that a word of encouragement and a pat on the back from a teacher/mentor means a lot to a FIRST Robotics student and goes a long way... Re: One thing you learnt this season
When your car catches on fire stand next to it and act like nothing is happening. Then, realize that you should probably call the fire department so that you will still have some way of getting to robotics. (the part about the car catching on fire is true)

I realized just how much time I have on my hands during the 6 weeks that all you lucky FIRSTies got to build and sweat over your beloved creation. I miss that joy. College schedules don't help at all for attending regionals. My experiences from FIRST really has helped me so far through the college classes that I've taken. Standing back and just watching is so hard. But watching the growth of future/starting teams is fun. I won't have that joy of driving at regionals anymore Man, growing up is hard to do... |

![]() Plus i like to stand on things, and i'm nice a lot, its just when i'm mean, i'm really mean (only when i have to be, not a lot) SHORT PEOPLE ROCK!!! how else you put those screws in tight places and have people under the robot working on it if you didn't have little people with small hands!! You would no doubt be in deep doo doo without us short people!!! |
