Re: Pacific Northwest Regional in Portland, OR

Team 1301 from Nathan Hale (Seattle) is here. I've seen Teams 360 (Seattle), 473 (Corvallis, Montana), 753 (Bend, Oregon), 879 (North Dakota), 949 (Seattle), and 1039 (Washington) here at the Red Lion. Team 846 is holding a strategy session in the lobby not ten feet from me as I write this.

I'm going to be posting pictures and event reports each evening from the regional. I've already put up some pictures from our Seattle practice session on Feb 21.

Wow...only two matches and Portland looks way more exciting than VCU. How bout' the last match where the ball catcher got shove away from collecting the balls and the other alliance capped. No bar play but it was exciting enough.

Re: Pacific Northwest Regional in Portland, OR

Looks like a very exciting event. I saw a team start capping (start picking up big ball off floor) in the last 10 seconds and they did it. Also, they just hung 3 robots at once and that was a last 4 seconds play.

Re: Pacific Northwest Regional in Portland, OR

we are just waiting for the finals to start right? They already picked teams. I'm excited for alliance 2 the fridge with its ball catching 1087 and the scallywags 1359 with their consistent hanging. I also like the 488 robot with its ability to suck up a couple balls and hang in one match. I can't wait till the finals start good luck to everyone!

Re: Pacific Northwest Regional in Portland, OR

Poor guys seem to be suffering from a plauge of gremlins.
Still a very good looking regional with great action.Great job guys.
I hope ours comes out as well next year (with minimal glitches *crosses fingers*).

Re: Pacific Northwest Regional in Portland, OR

We're baaaack! We (Team 948) just got back to Bellevue (Newport HS) from Portland. Here's my report: The field had a high rate of error, especially during the final round - If anyone was watching the webcast, you'll know that it took quite a long time (at least an hour?) to get down the last match. The robots wouldn't turn on during and after autonomous mode at least twice, and one robot even shorted the field and created a big cloud of smoke and the OI wires got all hot. Still, it was very exciting to watch. And team 1359 has a very stylish team. Teams 948, 997, and 1359 stayed at the Ramada Inn half a block away from the arena.

-Edit-
What does the caliber of competition at Portland look like compared to other competitions?

Team 360 was the robot on the outside of the vertical bar on the first 3 hangers on Friday. It could be called the story of the "Little FP Motor that could..." we started smoking and tripping breakers... but we stayed up.

We (360) were undefeated on Friday (7 matches) and today had 1 tie and 1 DQ (because another robot rammed us and then became entangled).

I was amazed at how many field and control problems they were having. According to Hut and Blair (the FIRST people) and Bob (the IF guy) the field was shipped before anything was tested. So, it sounds like most of the problems were sorted out at the first weekend of regionals.

I was amazed at how little defense there was during the qualification matches and how much defense there was during the finals matches.

Good Luck to Everyone Else.

Sorry about that 360. We (1294) were the ones that rammed and entangled you guys. We totally didn't mean to get entangled on you guys at all. We were just trying to prevent you guys from getting up so you couldn't hang. Once your cable got stuck on us there wasn't much we could do. We weren't trying to get you DQ'd or anything.

And sorry about putting the mobile goal on top of you in the quarterfinals. That wasn't intentional either, just the result of a hardcore pushing match. We were trying to get the mobile goal under your ball dump, and you guys were in the way. So we pushed, and somehow the mobile goal ended up on top of you guys.

We are really sorry about all of that. You guys had a really good robot. Hopefully you guys will do good if you are going to nationals or anything.

Hopefully there are no hard feelings.

Re: Pacific Northwest Regional in Portland, OR

We were allied with 360 and 956 in the finals.

Our team was greatful for having been picked by 360 to go onto the finals, and its too bad that we had so much trouble. I thought 360 did a good job of picking an alliance that every robot complimented ethcother's abilities, so that no matter which two would be out we had the possibility of capping and hanging and had at least one good ball hearder.

Again we are very thankful for getting to continue in the finals, even though we didnt last long in the double elimination.
