Linksys Router Help

Hey All,

couldn't find the correct category for this but eh eventually I'll tell brandon to open up a thread for PC Assistance / Networking

Ok to the issue at hand. My Linksys router seems to be giving me serious problems.

This is a Cable/DSL Router + Built in 4 Port hub & Is Wireless Capable

Timeline
Sunday - Me and my dad figure out why the router wasn't allowing multiple PC connections through the DSL line (I plugged the wire into the wrong port I plugged it into the Incoming on the LAN port instead of the provided WAN port.). After that my 2 PC's and Laptop were able to share the internet.

Sunday Night - Everything is still working fine Was able to log onto FIRST / XANGA and MSN etc....

Monday - All 3 PCS were working fine on the network accept. I could no longer log onto FIRST / XANGA / or MSN ( the 3 sites I use the most )

Tuesday (today) - Same issue

I doubt it's my ISP b/c I reset the DSL Modem and checked all the connections. I reset my router to factory Default at least 3 times so far. with no response. I tried pinging all 3 and they have come back with request timeouts. I've swapped between IE6 and Netscape 7 with no result. I shut my firewall off - no result, I've checked the Security / Privacy and Content under the Internet Options - thats set correctly. WHAT AM I MISSING and WHY DID IT TAKE NEARLY A DAY TO HAVE REPRUCTIONS

I know you guys have wireless / some form of network for the simple fact that we're all FIRSTers and need to be on Delphi whereever we are lol

So of those with a DSL PC Network or just a network / Cable PC Network I need some help and will be in your debt for any assistance set forth

Thanks ahead of time!

Edit:// Add Microsoft Update to that list of non connects forgot to list them

The network DOES work fine Between sometime after i used the net Sunday night up until now the sites i normally go to no longer connect. Yahoo, Tripod, Chiefdelphi (which i'm happy about) are a few of which i'm still getting response from.

I have tried accessing these sites on the other 2 PCs I have in my house attached to the network, And YES I still have access to my PC's

Some good news Some Bad News Good News is there is nothing wrong with the router / my network, The Bad news it could be the DSL Modem.

Re: Linksys Router Help

That dosen't sound like a router problem.

Are you able to get other websites up, just not those sites?, and is the network still working between the comps (can you still see and access the other computers).

Also have you tried getting those sites on another computer on the network?

I've had to call Linksys with a problem (bathroom flooded electrical closet ) and they were very helpful. The speakerphone was on for 20 minutes, but got very good help.

That said, what is the model number? Are you connected through it right now? What changed between Sunday night and Monday? (except:excluding, accept:consider or hold as true)

Re: Linksys Router Help

Generally, a browser wouldn't stop you from pinging an address. If you plug your computer back into the DSL modem, does it work? Also, do you use PPPoE software on your computer (like RaSPPPoE or Enternet), if it does, did you properly set that up in your router? (I know that sometimes the login information can hang on if you switch computers..) Also, your DNS servers could possibly be down so try pinging something like: 64.233.161.99 [google] or 207.46.156.188 [microsoft]. If those respond, something probably got screwed up between your ISP's DNS servers, your modem getting the wrong DNS servers, your router screwing something up, or your computer not properly using the router's pass-through DNS server (or whatever the real term is). Also, I believe linksys broadband routers have a diagnostic part where you can see if the connection is up along with the DNS servers and all that fun stuff.. play around in there and see if it's going and if there's been any traffic. (Even though your computers may not be able to get online, the router should still be sending idle traffic to your ISP). If you can't find out in the router if everything is working, call up your ISPs tech support just to make sure everything on their end is working properly.. (I wouldn't even bother asking my ISP for support with that, most ISPs generally don't do tech support for 2+ computers). That would just be a point when linksys supports throws out the all-too-common "It's your ISPs problem, not ours!" that we've all come to loathe.

Also, CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD FOR YOUR ROUTER LOGIN! Whew. Do that after you get everything set up. Unless you live 10 miles away from a road, you'll probably have a wardriver go by your house. (I wardrove.. err.. warwalked.. through my neighborhood of 5 houses and found 2 WAPs with no protection whatsoever. Good thing I'm a nice kid )

Hope this helps. (Anyone wanna hire me as a tech-support drone? )

Just a note: Mozilla is actually a Netscape browser, it was created off of the source codes that had been released for an older version of netscape (and now netscape actually bases its revisions on mozilla!)

Also thats a good idea to try plugging a computer into the dsl directly, its odd that some internet would work but not everything.

The router does have its own ip address, and you can access settings on the router from a computer on the network just by typing in the ip (i think its something like 192.168.1.1)

This link goes to a pdf manual for a linksys wireless b router, it may not be the one you have, but all the manuals are about the same:
http://media-server.amazon.com/media...L000000280.pdf

Hope this helps!

Ok Pinged Google and Microsoft and of course the winner is drumrole plz ---- Google. Microsoft Timed out. I know for a fact that ain't nobody in my neighborhood that has a wireless router setup.... its a known fact since i hooked up 90% of the people on my blocks pc systems lol..... anyways i get traffic through some not all websites. this goes the same when i have it directly plugged into the dsl line. i have changed my routers IP and Subnet Mask. My ISP has supported all 3 of my computers on sunday and sunday night (days b4 then i had it hookep up backwards [for nearly 3 months lmao] and then me and my father sought out the reason why i wasn't having multiple pcs online at once [plugged the dsl in the hub part of the router and not the WAN port {stupid me}] and then all of it just stopped getting info from certain sites. maybe the DNS & my ISP is using is being dumb. the router sees my ISP's IP, DNS, Subnet Mask and i have the router set up as my DHCP, i have no PPPoe -- or whatever it is:-) my ISP does not require a login name or PW and in typing all this I'm missing what is going on on my Blog, FIRST's site, Windows Update and my Hotmail Account and Unemployment Insureance for my father!

I should be happy that Yahoo and Chiefdelphi still work as well as Tripod and Google <--- which I never use adn digitallyimported.com lol :-)

Well, it's not that.. I just used my neighborhood for an example as a prime attack target for a malicious wardriver. Someone could have had access to a bunch of routers on high-speed broadband lines by doing VERY little work. Changing the admin password on your router will, for the most part, protect it from intruders trying to change settings or something like that. (It won't stop people from logging onto your network, though)

The problem you're having sounds like a problem with your ISP. I'd doubt it deals with any of the hardware you have as usually stuff would just _not_ work. My only guess would be that your DSL modem magically set up some weird restrictive firewall blocking an IP range or something. If the problem persists if your router isn't even in use, it's obviously not the router's problem. Since you have multiple computers, it's less likely that's the problem (as screwing something up twice on different computers is hard! ) Also, since it is allowing some specific traffic, I'm quite positive there's nothing wrong with the cables or your DSL modem (as cat5 cables and DSL modems aren't too picky about things they don't work with). If you have a friend with a laptop and the same DSL service as you (with a fully-working connection), ask him if he could bring the modem and his laptop over and see if they work together through your line then see if his laptop works with your modem then see if your computers work with his modem. It'll be a pretty quick test to see if the problem is on your end or your ISPs. If you can't do that, give your ISP a call.

Re: Linksys Router Help

hehe funny thing i just noticed as i was doing what "Linksys" has suggested me to for future problems.

I was told to visit www.Linksys.com from time to time to check for updates.

I type in the link and guess what happens it times out Anyways Linksys has did the best they could and I'll just have to call the people up at MCI and see what in blazers is going on b/c this is all too weird that all of sudden things just stop functioning the way they used to. I really don't know anyone else out by me who uses MCI's DSL service. I know my friends either use 56K or Cable. And before I'd even ask them to come over with their setup I would first want to know if they're having any issues otherwise there's no point in them making the trip only to get the same non responsive result. The day a CAT5 cable judges what comes in an out the ports will be the day I uncrimp it from another persons mistake in closing a door on it . I was waiting for the dumbest question but i was fooled "Did you remember to pay your DSL bill"? and the answer would've been yep on march 10th. lol Oh wells I'll give the people at MCI a call later on when I know there not drooling on their keyboards from over sleeping and punching the wrong keys heh.

Thanks for the help guys esp evulish.

As long as I have CD i'm ok. I won't be pleased but 1 good website is better then non!

Good luck at the regionals and see maybe 1 or 2 of u at the NYC Regional next week hopefully!
